Cassie POV

The sun was just starting to peak through the murky clouds as I turn right onto a slip road. Trees surround me like a besieged castle. My headlights are beacons under the shade of the forest canopy. In the near distance I see the wreck of Cory's car wrapped around a tree. The colour drains out of my face, horror takes a hold of my entire body as I see Cory's head lolled forward on his chest. The headlights of the car are smashed in with the barest amount of orange light. The front of the car is crumpled and giving off huge white fumes of smoke. Then I see Ty in the back seat his face painted all across in agony with an enormous branch speared through his chest. I slam my car door and bang my fists against the back window of Cory's car.

I hear the faintest whisper of, "Cassie, get the tweezers out of your car." Sprinting back to my car I snatch the tweezers out of the glove box and ran back as fast as my trembling legs would allow me. Ty looks like he's on the cusp of death. He scoots around slowly moving as much as the massive branch allows him to in the tiny proximity of the back seat. "Ty be careful! Why are you turning around?" I cry. "I don't have long Cassie, but just listen. Pull the branch out slowly, if I shout in pain don't stop ok? You're my best friend and I don't expect what I'm asking to make any sense to you, but please just do it. Trust I know what I'm doing." Listening to what Ty was saying was insane I needed to call a hospital, but a part of me deep down trusted him and his judgement. I did as he told dragging the branch out as gently as I could, he shouted in pain multiple times. Yet I didn't stop, I continued as he'd asked. Though every time he shouted in pain, floods of tears ran down my face. Making me glad I didn't wear make-up as it would mess up my face up more than it already looked.

Finally the branch was out, despite it leaving a colossal and gaping wound where it had formerly been. "I got it out, but I really should call an ambulance for you and Cory though Ty." "They won't make it in time! In order to save mine and Cory's lives I need you to do one more thing for me." Ty said his back facing me. "I'll do anything! What do you need?" I reply. "Using the tweezers I want you to pull the splinters out heading towards my heart. I'll tell you when there all out and I'll brace myself against the armrest in the middle of the car." What I was doing was crazy! I'm not a surgeon; I have no medical skills, but I needed to save my friends. That night I had never had more steady hands. The sight of blood and gore didn't matter to me. What motivated me was my two best friends, their survival is what matters most.

I plunged the tweezers into the wound and began extracting the splinters with as much care and precision I could manage. I kept concentrating, focusing on the task at hand. I didn't have time to admire the view of Ty's sculpted muscular back, as he tensed every time I got a splinter out. I could tell it was taking all his energy not to scream out in pain. After one more splinter was out, Ty spoke in a hushed tone, "That's the last one. My wound will start to heal- I'll explain later. Did you bring a t-shirt out of the clothes I asked you to get?" "Yes, I'll go grab it. Hold on, ok?"

A minute later I was back with the white t-shirt. Which now I knew what injuries Ty had attained was probably a bad idea, but I had no time to change my decision now. I was paranoid of Ty's and Cory's condition, although miraculously I felt as if someone was softening my worried state of mind. As I approached the car I saw a shirtless and healthier looking Ty, my cheeks flushed. He must've taken it off when I left. I threw the t-shirt at his face and rapidly turned around. I must've looked as red as a tomato as Ty looked at me with a cocky smile. "You can turn around now Cassie. It's not as if me without a shirt is something you haven't seen before. Our parents bathed us together when we were babies." "Yeah well you-er-well I think you-erm-"I stuttered trying to think of an excuse to get me out of this awkward confrontation, I couldn't think of one so I just told the truth, "You looked a lot different back then!" "Mmhmmm... did you notice I've been working out lately?""Oh shut up!" I fired back at him. Spinning around to face him once more. "We need to get to Cory, help me lift him out of the car would you?" Ty asked. "Of course! Though Mr strong man didn't you say you'd been working out? "I answer sarcastically. Ty chuckled, then reached into the car as I held the car door open- waiting to help.
