Rachel kept pacing up and down the abandoned psychiatric ward. Growing more and more impatient. Sooner or later she would figure out something was wrong. As if Tyler really was Cassie and Cory's best friend how come he hadn't realised they were missing? Had her plan already backfired before it had begun?
Cassie and Cory were huddled together in the corner of the room. Cassie lent her head on Cory's lap and Cory held her head still. She was sickly pale and growing frailer by the minute. Due to the blunt force when Rachel had hit her over the head with a fire extinguisher, she had lost a lot of blood and was in a fragile condition. She couldn't talk, she didn't have the energy as it was draining enough staying awake. Cory kept whispering sweet nothings and encouraging messages in her to try to cheer her up and take her mind off the great amount of pain she was in. She was grateful that Cory was such a great friend and if she never saw Tyler again at least she had one of her best friends with her in her final moments as she took her last breathe. Cory was scared to death of loosing Cassie. He loved her with his heart and soul, but his love was unrequited. He thought Cassie would always see him as the quirky best friend.
Cory wished Rachel would spare Cassie and take him instead. Despite how many times he pleaded and begged Rachel to do this, she became angrier and more threatening. Eventually he gave up asking and tried to think of a way for them to escape.
                              *Back at Stone Ledge Cottage*
                              Tyler POV
Stone Ledge Cottage was a quaint little cottage with white washed walls and stone cladding decorating the properties exterior. It had a large wooden door with a medieval iron knocker.
Towards the back of Stone Ledge is a huge family crypt where generations of Coleharts have been buried. Maia and Nathaniel told me when I stayed at their home last summer that this is their family's sacred burial grounds and they can only draw power from their ancestors.
I use the medieval iron knocker on the front door and in a few minutes a very flustered Maia in her dressing gown answered the door. "Have I caught you at a bad time?" I asked.
"It's 1am in the morning Tyler and I was asleep! Just because vamps don't need sleep doesn't mean us mundanes do as well."
"Sorry I forget sometimes, but I wouldn't be here if it wasn't urgent. Cassie and Cory need your help!"I replied to Maia before Nathaniel came to the door rubbing his eyes, "Maia who is it?"
"Tyler needs our help." Maia said.
                              *Twenty minutes later*
Maia and Nathaniel got changed and sat on the sofa opposite me whilst I caught them up on everything that has happened. "What I want to know is why you haven't made a move on this girl Cassie?"
"It's not that simple Maia, it's not the right time."I replied.
"Tyler believe me when I say there's never a right time. You've been crushing on this girl for forever. You never know she might feel the same way."Maia said.
"Enough playing Cupid Maia, Tyler needs us." Nathaniel replied and winked at me.
"Your friends are trapped by your sire. We can make you invisible, but you have to stay close to us to remain in the spells' boundaries. Do you have the wooden stakes to stake Rachel with?" Maia inquired.
"Yeah they're in the boot of my car." I answered.
"Sounds like we're ready to go Nathan said.
We all bundle in my car and make our way to the hospital.
                              *3 hours later*
We parked the car a few blocks from the hospital to avoid Rachels' immediate detection. Each of us held a wooden stake and Nathaniel slung the rest in his backpack. We creeped up to the hospital through the dimly lit alleyways. The night sky enveloped us under its cloak of darkness. As we approached the back of the hospital Maia and Nathaniel wilted the plants around us. So we had a clear-cut walkway to the forbidden hallway.
When we reached the entrance to the abandoned psychiatric ward it was exactly the same as I had left it prior. From the wooden door that had been recently kicked in, to the howling wind and the ripped down ivory laying in tatters on the ground. It was eerily quiet. Not a sound. So quiet you could hear a pin drop.
That's when I heard an ear piercing scream coming from what seemed like Cassie's voice outside. As I looked up to my absolute horror I saw a shrieking Cassie repeatedly spiralling 360 degrees through the air. Down the 30 floors of the hospital like a scythe she effortlessly cut through the air. Her arms and legs flailing. Almost simultaneously I vamp speeded to catch her, breaking the spells' boundaries just before she hit the ground. Before I had the chance to hold her in my arms and make sure she's okay I was shot with a wooden stake so close it was grazing my heart. I dropped to my knees wheezing and coughing up blood. Maia screamed at her brother, "How could you!-" although most of what she said was lost in the wind. Cassie wailed, "Nooooo!" And even in the state she was in she fumbled towards me, kneeling by my side. Tears streamed down her face. Maia after cursing her brother ran to, gripping my shoulders for balance. Cassie cupped my face, her emerald eyes twinkling, as she stared into my auburn orbs. Next she did something I never thought she would. Cassie crashed her lips passionately onto mine. Maia awed. Yet we didn't have time to bask in the moment of our spontaneous kiss as Nathaniel came towards us. Evilly grinning at me with cold and unforgiving eyes. Presenting the cross bow he had shot the stake at me from like it was a gruesome souvenir of war.
It wouldn't be long before the splinters pierced my heart. Whilst Cassie sobbed and stroked her hands fondly through my hair as she held me close to her chest with her arms wrapped around me. Our hearts burned with anger at Nathaniel, our former friend, had betrayed us.....
