Chapter 15

The next day Aurey was shaken awake by Vechs. She ignored him at first but it began to get annoying.

"Vechs stop." She whispered.

"Aurey, Bdubs wants to go on a walk with you. Will you please get out of bed and go for the walk. He's postponing his wife coming here for you."

Aurey reluctantly got out of bed. Vechs brushed her hair and fed her as he always did these days. He carried her up to their wood cabin. Bdubs was sitting in a chair waiting.

"Hello Aurey, it's nice to see you up and about." He greeted as Aurey walked unsteadily to him.

"Why do you want to go on a walk with me?" She asked bluntly.

"Aurey, you have been lying around for a month and a half. You need some exercise and so do I. Come on, let's go." Bdubs ushered Aurey outside.

She squinted in the bright light. Bdubs grabbed her arm and they walked out into an open field full of flowers.

"Aren't they pretty?" Bdubs prodded.

Aurey blinked repeatedly as she looked at the flowers. She hadn't seen anything pretty in ages. She had stopped believing in beauty when she found out about the...

Aurey bent down and sniffed a pink tulip. Then she gently plucked it and wove it into her hair.

"H-How do I look?" She asked Bdubs.

"Beautiful." He responded.

Aurey shakily rose.

"It's so nice out." She remarked.

"Yeah it is. That reminds me. Blame found some bunnies and was wondering if anyone wanted to help tame them and maybe adopt one. Are you interested?"

Aurey perked up at the mention of bunnies.

"Yes." She replied.

They walked back to the village where Blame was waiting.

"Ah Aurey, nice to see you out of bed. Are you here about the bunnies?" He greeted her.

"Yes." She responded.

Blame handed her some carrots.

"Their just over here. Follow me."

Aurey waved goodbye to Bdubs and followed Blame over to a clearing in the woods. She took one look at the bunnies, knelt down and began offering a cute black one with blue eyes a carrot. He reluctantly hopped forward and snatched up the carrot. He chewed it and ate it quickly and approached hopefully. Aurey continued to feed him carrots until he snuggled up in her lap, full.

"He's adorable. Can I have him Blame?" She asked, eyes wide.

Blame chuckled and nodded. He had already tamed the other bunnies but that one had taken time and seemed attached to Aurey so who was he to deny them both.

Aurey gently petted the rabbit.

"I'll call you... Vetchs 2.0." She declared.

Blame laughed.

"Vechs is going to love that name." He chuckled.

Just then Generik ran up.

"Hey Aurey!" He panted. "I heard you were out today. I was wondering if you'd maybe teach me to bake. I've been trying but I'm not very good."

"Of course." Aurey agreed. "Blame, can you watch Vechs 2.0 for me?"

"Definitely Aurey. I'll see you later."

"Bye!"

...

"See, that isn't to hard is it Genny?"

Aurey had spent two hours teaching Generik how to make cookies. He was slowly chewing on one.

"Even though I botched it up, it still tastes good. How do you do that?" He asked, astounded.

She giggled.

"I don't know. I guess it's just a gift."

"Must be." Generik commented.

Vechs popped his head into the communal kitchen.

"Genny, I'm going to borrow Aurey for a bit" He said.

"Alright. I'll clean up the mess I made. See you later Aurey!"

"See you Genny!"

...

"Vechs, why is everyone being so... insanely nice today?" Aurey questioned.

"I don't know what your taking about." He lied.

Aurey rolled her eyes.

They were climbing down the ladder to the underground portion of their base.

"Are you hungry?" Vechs asked.

"Starving." Aurey replied.

"How does pork chops sound?" Vechs questioned.

"Amazing." Aurey said licking her lips.

She hadn't been eating much lately and was starving.

After a hearty meal of pork chops, mashed potatoes and milk (Aurey made the potatoes) Aurey and Vechs went to their bedroom to get ready for bed. Aurey had adopted Vechs way of sleeping in ones under garments. She had been sleeping in her dress as if late and said dress was dirty and needed a wash. Aurey sat on their bed yawning. Vechs sat down next to her. He pulled his scarlet haired goddess into his lap and wrapped his arms around her.

"Aurey, will you sing me a song?" He asked.

"Um, sure." She responded.

"🎶Rock'a'by Vetchy on the tree tops. When the wind blows, you shift and you rock. When the bough breaks, Vetchy will fall. And down will come Vetchy, goggles and all.🎶"

Aurey giggled.

"That was terrible. I'm sorry."

"No it wasn't. You have a great voice, by the way." Vechs told her, poking her nose.

Aurey glanced up into his eyes and saw a fire she recognized. Immediately her recent pain returned in the firm of a dull ache.

"Vechs. No. It's to soon after..." Aurey trailed off.

"I will wait a million lifetimes for you to be ready Aurey. I will never pressure you." Vechs assured her.

Aurey turned and wrapped her around Vechs, her cheek pressed into his bare chest.

"I love you Vetchy. I don't tell you enough." She whispered.

Vechs kissed the top of Aurey's head.

"I love you to. You don't have to tell me. I know you love me."

They fell asleep tangled in each other's arms. For the first time since she found out about the miscarriage, Aurey had a peaceful sleep.
