Chapter 8

The tension between Aurey and Vechs throughout the next week was so thick it almost hung in the air. The other MindCrackers noticed it but didn't make any comments. They were all preparing for a big ceremony. There would be an assembly in the MindCrack hall and then a party in the newly finished mansion and then a fireworks show, curtesy of Aurey, who had gotten a stack from Etho after gathering four stacks of string for him (meaning she "borrowed" them from Vechs). All the preparations kept the two apart for the most part, but when the two were in the same room, the air was charged. It had been like that since that day Aurey had finished the dining room. It had been Guude and GernrikB who had been at the door. Genny was the one who had shouted for Aurey. Aurey wasn't speaking to him, much to his confusion. Not that you could blame her. Who knows how long it will be until the next moment like that, was all Aurey could think about when she reflected on the almost-kiss between her an Vechs. Speaking of Vechs, he was planning ways to destroy Generik.
They had been so close and then the moment snatched away by that impatient fool. Needless to say, Vechs was royally pissed off. When the day of the big Ceremony arrived, the MindCrackers filed into the hall. Guude started speaking of an upcoming change. Not that Aurey nor Vechs was paying much attention.

The MindCrack mansion was full of people. Aurey had prepared food for everyone and the MindCrackers were all seated around the table. They all had labeled seats, some with nicknames, some without. The ones without didn't have them because Aurey couldn't think of one for that specific person.
"Wow Aurey, this food is great." GenerikB commented, hoping to win some brownie points for that and maybe get her to talk to him again.
Aurey shot him a surprisingly cold look.
"Thank you Generik." She said stiffly in her normal cheery tone.
"What did you do to her?" Whispered Etho, who was seated next to Generik.
"I have no idea. That's the first time she spoke to me since I went with Guude to this mansion last week to see if we could hold dinner here. She came around the corner looking flustered and then Vechs followed her and left via the portal." Generik whispered back
"I wonder if they were..." Etho trailed off with a pervy glint in his eyes.
Generik made a disgusted face.
"No way dude, that's not Aurey. I knew her before I came here and she wouldn't. She's only been here three months."
"Yeah but she spends tons of time with Vechs so it's possible." Etho argued.
Suddenly, Generik noticed it was terribly quiet. He looked away from Etho and saw everyone was looking at them. His face burned. He glanced at Aurey and there were tears glistening in her eyes.
"Excuse me everyone." She said quietly and fled the room.
Vechs leaped up and ran after her.
"See what I mean?" Etho remarked.
Generik punched him.
"What the hell man?" He barked.
"Look what you did." Generik motioned to Aurey and Vechs' empty seats.
Guude was glaring at both if them.
"Etho, Generik. Please come with me." He ordered.
Etho groaned but Generik just got up and followed Guude out with Etho trailing behind him.

Meanwhile, upstairs in the art room Aurey was sitting on the stool sobbing into her hands. She was so embarrassed. No doubt they all thought she and Vechs were... she couldn't even think it. She heard the door swing open and close. She looked up to see Vechs hovering by the doorway. She put her face back in her hands. She heard him walk over and kneel down. He slowly and gently pried her hands from her face and tilted her chin up. Like he had before, he used his other hand to wipe away her tears. She realized he wasn't wearing his gloves, unlike he usually did. She looked up at his face and saw his googles around his neck. Her green eyes met his blue ones. Fueled by a swell of emotion, she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. She felt him stiffen, then relax and kiss her back. And that's when the door slammed open.
"Aw crap!" Someone muttered.
"Close the door Etho." Someone else hissed but Aurey and Vechs broke apart.
Aurey turned her eyes to the door where Etho was standing wide eyed just inside the doorway and Generik was standing just behind Etho with his hands respectfully over his eyes. Aurey felt Vechs stand up. She glanced at him and saw a murderous gleam in his eye. She didn't realize until it was to late. He walked up to Etho and stabbed him with a diamond knife. As Etho faded away they heard him call: "No cool!"
"Vechs!" Aurey cried, astounded at his show of violence.
"Don't worry Aurey, he'll have already respawned." Vechs assured her.
She breathed a sigh if relief. Even after three months, she wasn't used to the fact you respawned when you died. She pulled on Vechs shoulder, bringing in down to her height.
"Can you come over later?" She murmured softly.
He nodded so she let go of his shoulder.
"Is dinner over?" Aurey asked Generik, no stiffness or iciness in her tone.
"Nah, us men love eating." He said with a half-hearted smile, testing her reaction. "And I'm sorry about at the table. I swear, I never thought you guys were... you know."
Aurey flashed him a bright smile.
"I know and I not mad at you. Now how about we go see if there is anything left before I bring out dessert."

It did indeed finally happen. The long awaited kiss has arrived, or at least it was long awaited by me.
