A sparrow perched on a tree's bow
Feathers worn and winter gnawed
Trapped in frost, he is enthralled
What a formidable treasure
His song precious in icy weather
Underneath a blind white sky
Echoes his melody of hope
How proud he sings every note
No sparrow ever was so bold
As to sing before spring takes its hold
But from his bare, jagged perch
See his strayed and hungry form
The ever-persisting winter storm
'Tis a wistful song he sings
Until the death winter brings
