04 → "THOMAS, THE STUPIDLY BRAVE"
That night, by torch light, Gally and Alby crossed off Ben's name from their name wall of Gladers. Many names had been crossed off already when Adeline arrived, and there hadn't been any others that had to be crossed off in the year she had been here. But, now there was, and that left a hollow feeling inside Adeline's stomach as she sat on her hammock, watching them in the distance. The events of the Banishment were etched inside her mind, repeating over and over like a skipping disc. No matter how many times she tried to push the images of the pleading boy away, they would resurface. Finally, Adeline managed to fall a sleep for the night.
But, Adeline woke half an hour before she needed to be. The moment she woke up, it took a good minute before her mind reminded her of what had occurred last night, and Adeline groaned into the palm of her hands, before raking her fingers through her hair. With another groan, Adeline got up half an hour early and went to the shower stalls to freshen up, to try clear her head. She stood under one of the broken shower heads, the one that struggled to spray a decent amount of water, the only Glader in the shower stalls at this time of morning, rubbing the sleep from the corner of her eyes, before she shut the water off altogether, dried off and changed into a fresh set of clothes. Adeline always washed her clothes and hung them up on the rope that strung up her hammock to dry. She was one of the only who actually changed up the clothes she wore — she couldn't stand re wearing the same clothes day after day, especially if they were dirty. When she stepped out of the shower stalls, she found that in the fifteen minutes it'd taken her to get up and shower, Alby, Minho and Newt had woken up, also. At the Doors, she found Newt sending the Keeper of the Runners and their Leader off into the Maze. The Doors rumbled open, and both of them shook Newt's hand before racing into the Maze corridor.
Wait, why is Alby going in there? He's not a Runner.
When they had disappeared into the Maze, Newt turned away. For a moment, he didn't sense Adeline watching, but as soon as he became aware that she was awake, he limped towards her. As he neared her, she noticed that the blonde's hair was disheveled and his eyes appeared more tired than usual. She sensed that he didn't get much sleep last night. Not like she blamed him.
"You're up early." Newt stated as he stopped before her. "Well, earlier than you need to be. Didn't sleep well?"
"Somethin' like that, I guess." Adeline shrugged. "Thought I'd get to the showers first this mornin'. Anyway, what's goin' on with Alby runnin' into the Maze with Minho? He's not a Runner."
Newt briefly turned towards the Maze, then back to her. "Gone to track Ben's steps after last night." Newt explained.
"Oh." Adeline gave a brief nod. She began to walk towards her hammock, where she left her dirty clothes (which she made a mental note to wash after lunch that afternoon), Newt walking alongside her until they found themselves at the door to the Kitchen. At that, Newt came to a stop.
