33 → "THE PROMISED SAFE HAVEN"
The Berg landed, and they transferred from the Berg to the ship — which they'd been patching up and had planned to set sail on the day that they'd left for the Last City, against Vince's orders. Then, hours later, as the sun was rising, they'd arrived at the Safe Haven.
And it was beautiful. Peaceful.
They docked the boat and trudged through the shallow ends of the ocean to the shore of the Haven. As soon as each and every one of them were off the boat, Vince ordered for Adeline and Thomas to be quickly transferred from the ship to a medical hut, and to remain there until she was better. The serum that Teresa had rushed to give Thomas, which Newt had inserted into her arm not long after the Berg flew away from the crumbling building, appeared to be working. Newt had stayed beside her, leaving only when he had to, and within the first four hours of their arrival, the effects of the virus had seemed to reverse. The others came in every now and again to check up on her, and by almost mid morning, most of the physical signs of the virus — the blackened veins, the coughing up of the dark blood, the dark pupils, the heavy breathing — had disappeared. It was a miracle. Teresa had been right. Thomas' blood can cure the virus.
Adeline was on and off awake throughout the next four hours. Then, after hours of being passed out, and since they'd arrived at the Safe Haven, she woke up for good. Newt had spent those few hours at the Haven attempting to enjoy his newfound freedom, while making sure Adeline was getting better. When Adeline came to, Newt — who had fallen asleep on the chair by her bedside — woke up, eyes snapping open.
"Newt ..." She breathed, unsure of where she was. Newt sat upright, realising she was conscious again. His hand reached for hers, and she took it. "What happened? Where am I?"
"We're at the Safe Haven. Been here a few hours." Newt said. "You're not sick anymore. You're cured."
"But ... how?" She stammered, almost grimacing. "I don't remember anything after ... after attacking you and Thomas in the Last City."
"Tommy." Newt states, as if he couldn't believe it himself. "Teresa found a cure. It was Thomas' blood that cured you."
"So, that's why Brenda got better?" Adeline realised. Then, she realised. Teresa. "Wait ... Teresa. The same girl who betrayed us by giving WICKED the location of the Right Arm Base. She found a cure?"
"Yeah." Newt nodded. "And you're better now. How do you feel?"
Adeline, although having little memory of what'd happened what happened hours ago, felt ... normal. There was no itch that made her want to snap anymore, and she felt like she had before she'd gotten infected. She felt like herself again. The virus wasn't eating at her anymore.
