09 → "FOR ALL WE KNOW, THIS COULD KILL HIM."
After allowing Thomas to go up and talk to the girl, who had confided in her and told Adeline that her name was Teresa, Adeline went off to the kitchen, then went off and looked for Newt, who she found in the medical hut. He was seated next to Alby's bedside, staring off into space. He looked tired — not tired as in physically, although Newt barely slept enough as it is, but tired mentally. Adeline came to an abrupt stop momentarily, trying to decide if it was best to be here with him currently, or if she should leave the boy alone for a good while. But, her feet had already moved, and she stopped beside him. Adeline placed her hand on Newt's shoulder, startling him. Newt jumped to his feet, causing Adeline to step forward and grasp his shoulders.
"Hey, it's only me." Adeline squeezed Newt's shoulders reassuringly. Newt's face softened as he realised it was her. Those tired eyes glistened slightly. Adeline released her hold on Newt's shoulders, letting her hands drop to her sides.
"Oh ... sorry." Newt breathed, running his fingers through his hair momentarily.
"Everythin' 'kay?" Adeline's voice dropped slightly. Newt gave a nod, but it didn't reassure her that the British blond was okay at all. Adeline didn't expect him to be, regardless, though. Alby had been stung, and the last thing Newt needed was another friend to die. Adeline craned her neck and stared at their Leader, fighting against the restraints that held him down. It's insane how a week ago everything had been as normal as it could be, and now Alby is being restrained to the bed as his body goes through the Changing. "How's Alby?"
"Still the same." Newt responded. "Nothin' has changed."
Adeline gave a, long, discouraged sigh. If there was one thing that hurt more than seeing their leader like this, it was the idea of not knowing how to cure him of the Griever sting. After everything that had been happening, just thinking about this situation, made Adeline's head hurt. Adeline could tell it was also stressing Newt out — being the, hopefully temporary, Leader while Alby was out. It was too much for Newt, Adeline could see it in his face.
"I have no bloody idea what to do." Newt huffed, bringing Adeline back from her thought spiral. She met his eyes. "And I've got those shanks relying on me to take charge."
Adeline frowned, reaching a hand up to reassure him. She gave his shoulder a squeeze. But, when she dropped her hand back to her side, Newt grasped it and intertwined their fingers together. This time, he squeezed her hand, maybe in a way to reassure her not to worry about him. Giving a long sigh, Newt reached out his right arm and again grabbed her other arm, intertwined their fingers, then pulled her towards him. Anyone could see how close they were, how much both confided in one another after everything. Even after he'd kissed her yesterday. They were inches from one another, so close ... but, were interrupted. Newt was the first to react, letting go of her hands and stepping back slightly. When Adeline turned on her heels, when she recognised the voice that had interrupted them both, she came face to face with Thomas, then Teresa. Jeff and Clint, the Med - Jacks, followed after them. The girl eyed them both, as if she sensed that they'd interrupted something.
Thomas spoke first; he rushed out a jumble of words. That two syringes came up in with Teresa, that they think that what was inside could cure Alby's Griever sting. Newt turned one of the syringes over, examining it. Teresa handed Adeline the second syringe. Adeline stared at the syringe — "WCKD" printed on one side, filled with a mysterious almost turquoise blue liquid.
"We don't even know what this stuff is, we don't know who sent it or why it came up with you — " Newt pointed at Teresa. " — I mean, for all we know, this stuff could kill him!"
"He's already dying." Thomas reasoned. "Look at him. How could this possibly make it any worse? C'mon, it's worth a try." Newt went to disagree, when Adeline suddenly spoke up.
"He's right." Adeline started. "Alby — he's dying."
"Adeline, this stuff, it could bloody kill him!" Newt snapped, shocked that she'd side with Thomas.
"We're at a dead end, Newt!" Adeline argued back. "We have no antidote. Look at him —" she pointed at the restrained boy. "What if the stuff in the syringe is the antidote."
"What if —"
Newt was cut off, because suddenly, everything went nuts. Alby started screaming, his hands gripping Adeline's shirt. It happened so fast, that by the end, Adeline was reeling. With so much strength, their Leader's hands lock around Adeline's throat.
"You shouldn't be here! Shouldn't be here!" Alby screamed. Someone's arms — Newt's arms — were around her waist, pulling her away. Thomas was trying to pry Alby's hands from her throat.
"Get the syringe!" Thomas ordered. Then, in a blur, Teresa, in one swift movement, plunged one of the syringes into his chest. In a moment, the boys hands released her, and Adeline fell back, taking Newt down with her in the process. They landed in a tangle on the ground, and Adeline crawled off of him, got to her knees slowly, gasping like a fish out of water, sucking oxygen back into her lungs. Newt was up, moments after, and helped Adeline to her feet. Adeline, feeling she could breathe, couldn't believe what had happened. She was reeling, but trembling in her shoes at the events that just unfolded. Newt pulled her into his arms, trying to calm her down.
"Well, that worked." Jeff commented.
"You're 'kay." Newt reassured. "You're 'kay."
Adeline buried her face in his shirt, still a trembling mess. The room was silent; not until Newt spoke up again.
"OK, from now on, someone stays here and watches him around the clock!" Newt ordered. "Bloody hell, everythin' is buggin' nuts."
