05 → "PESSIMISTIC"

Just like yesterday, a heavy silence hung over the group as they stood at the Doors, dumbfounded at what had just happened. Adeline stood there, combing through the recent events. Minho lugging an unconscious Alby, struggling as the Doors were closing. Thomas shuffling toward the closing Doors, squeezing himself through at the last second. It all happened in one big blur of events, and now they were left standing here, reeling from it all. All they could do was worry for the sake of the three boys stuck inside that Maze, although — even if Adeline didn't want to be a pessimist about it — they might not make it until morning once those Grievers come out. Boys began to disperse, realising that standing there didn't do anything. Adeline raked her fingers through her hair, moving it away from her face. She started to back away from the Doors, remembering that her job wasn't done yet for the day. But, as she began to move away, she realised that Newt stood frozen.

"Newt?" She sang, placing her hand to his shoulder. Newt's eyes went from the Doors to her, meeting hers. His face softened, and she offered her hand. "C'mon, you can't stand 'round here for hours."

"I - I can't believe —" Newt stutters. Adeline sighs, giving a nod.

"I know." She breathes. "I know. But we can't do anything 'bout it."

When Newt still wouldn't leave the Doors, Adeline gave a frustrated sigh at the boy. She didn't want to be frustrated at Newt, considering two of his best friends and their Newbie were stuck in the Maze, and she knew that all of this would hit the Second - in - Command a little harder after what she knew about Minho and what he'd done for Newt before she'd been sent up, but she also didn't think he should be acting like that.

"Fine. I gotta get back to the Kitchen. I'll see ya at dinner." Adeline huffed. Before she did officially begin to walk away from the boy, she spun back on her heels and called; "If you're still standin' here by the time dinner is being served, I swear Newt, I won't hesitate to drag you over to the table myself."

As soon as Adeline turned on her heels once more, Newt reached out and grabbed her hand, stopping the girl in her tracks. The gesture took her off guard, and Newt for whatever reason wouldn't let go of her hand. He threw her a look, that she couldn't tell if it was a grimace or if a forced smile through whatever he was feeling.

"I'm sorry." He muttered. "I'll see ya at dinner, good that?"

Adeline nodded. "Good that."

Dinner was somewhat delayed, but soon enough the boys sat around at the picnic tables. Boys sat there, nobody daring to utter a word. It was silent, but that wouldn't last long. Although the somber mood that hung across them, they were all feeling a range of emotions. One of them, though, just happened to be a strong sense of anger, and it radiated from nobody other than the Keeper of the Builders himself. He'd made it clear that his trust in the Newbie was starting to sway after he heroically ran into the Maze, although Adeline found that his anger was irrational as two of their friends, not just the damn Greenie, were stuck inside that Maze. Like most nights, Adeline sat beside Newt. And since the thirteen year old arrived a month before, and since she'd been the nicest to him at first, Chuck usually sat with them, also. Tonight, Chuck sat across from them. Usually their table consisted of Minho, too, yet over the last few meals, Thomas squished in between one of them. Tonight, it would just only be the three of them at that table.
