Chasing Snow - Chapter 14
Demetrius
I looked in the rearview mirror and saw Ivry's truck nearly swerve off the road. Panic rose to my throat and I felt my pockets with one hand for my phone. I pulled it out and tossed it to Lucas.
"Call Ivry and make sure she is okay." He nodded and put the phone to his ear as it rang.
"Hey, ma. Are you okay?" 'Ma? Really?" I thought as I gave him a look. He shrugged me off and continued talking. "Yeah. Okay. Okay. Will do. See you later." He hung up and gave me the phone and said, "She said she is fine, she was just surprised by something and that she says she loves you."
I nodded and cut the radio on. We drove with silence between as the music played on.
"That Lily girl was pretty hot," Lucas said simply as he lay back in his fully reclined seat.
"You are only 8 years old," I laughed.
"With the body of an 18 year old. I am not ignorant of sex or those things." He said as he looked out the window. How the hell was he having this conversation with me so casually?
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked him.
"Well I kind of want to hook up with her. You were with her sister at one point before you were with Ivry- I mean mom. Did you ever do it?"
I gave him the "What the hell is wrong with you look" and shook my head. "No I never did, back when I was actually a human that kind of thing wasn't appropriate until after I would have married her. Thank the gods that didn't happen."
"Yeah," he said drawing out the word. "So dad... any tips on how to be good in bed?"
"What the hell is wrong with you?" I yelled, slightly embarrassed. "You don't just talk about these things. Especially with your new father!"
"Well I mean I haven't inherited that package down there," he said as he gestured to a place that need not be mentioned. "I mean come on. What can I do to get some fun?"
"Why don't you go online and look it up or something. I can't worry about your libido right now. We are kind of on a mission."
"Okay. Okay. I'll lay off the questioning," Lucas submitted. "Another hundred miles or so and we should be close to the Ythan clan." I nodded and tried to think of what I knew about them and realized that I knew nothing besides their name.
"Who are the Ythan anyway?" I asked Lucas.
"They are a group of vegan vamps. They don't feast on humans. They go towards the artificial stuff or towards animal blood. They take towards the style of meditation and towards hand-to-hand fighting."
"Hand-to-hand?"
"You know, like Kung Fu, karate, all that Mortal Kombat stuff." I rolled my eyes even though I understood what he meant. "They are a bunch of peace loving people. It will be hard to get them to take part in a war."
"You haven't seen my full powers of persuasion," I snickered.
After another two and a half hours of driving we took an exit to some small town surrounded by trees. We drove through and it seemed like an old style town. We parked in front of a building with the sign that read "Beer". We all got out of the car and Blade was flipping a small blade in her hand while Lily carried a large case that looked like it held a cello.
"What's in the case," Lucas asked her trying to sound nonchalant. I rolled my eyes and hugged Ivry as Lucas made his attempt to look desirable.
"It's a Cheytac .408 caliber sniper rifle. I am the Cilius's best shot long distance. I've never missed a shot. Not too shabby with pistols either." Lily said as she patted the case.
Lucas looked thrown off by what she said and tried to hide it. Lily laughed and said, "It's okay. Not many people are used to hearing gun talk from a girl like me."
"Can we move on from this failure of a flirt fest and find the leader of this hippie bunch of vamps?" Blade interjected.
Lucas rolled his eyes and Lily looked to the ground and I couldn't help but to laugh. "Let's get going," I said.
I turned and an old man with silver hair stood behind me. "Am I the one you are looking for," he asked calmly.
Blade held her knives ready to attack and Lily drew out two handguns out of nowhere. I held my hand up and they lowered their weapons and I said, "Are you the leader of the Ythan clan of vampires?"
"Indeed I am. How may I help you... colorful group of young folks? I see you have a white wolf in your company." He bowed his head towards Ivry and she smiled back to him. "You all are welcome here. Come into our central place." He walked into the bar and we all followed him and walked in to see a typical diner with a bar with a few people sitting and chatting and laughing. He sat down at a large table and comfortably said, "What brings you people into my small town? You certainly don't seem to want to join my peaceful little community."
"Actually," I said as I pulled out a chair. "I have come to ask something of you and your people that seems to go against your style of life."
"And that is?"
"There is a war brewing. A war between the elders and ancient demons led by a bloodthirsty minion of the King of the Underworld. I have already obtained the help of the Indum and the Cilius clans to the cause. The only other clan that can help us and is close enough to help would be you."
"Why should my people sacrifice their ways of peace and happiness to help a cause that only leads to more death?"
"Because it is the duty of your people to help the elders," Lucas interjected.
His head snapped back and he held his now bloodied nose. I didn't even see what had happened but I saw the man cracking his knuckles. "I do not tolerate blatant disrespect from such a young person. Now why should I help you?" He asked again as he looked at me.
I swallowed the lump that had risen to my throat and I said, "If we cannot kill these demons when they first strike they will spread across the earth making our home into their new hell. They would come to your town and run through before you had a chance to even form a defense."
"If you are facing powers that strong what makes you think we would stand a chance when they first strike as opposed to later," he questioned in retaliation.
I was shocked by his question and really didn't have an answer. Lily stepped forward and she said, "If we face them alone we will surely fall. If we all stand together; the Cilius, the Indum, the Ythan, and even the werewolves. If we all stand together we have a chance of winning and keeping our lives safe. Isn't a small chance better than no chance at all?"
The man looked pleased and said, "You must be Lily of the Cilius clan. You are as well-crafted with your words as you are an accurate shot. I do not speak on behalf of my entire clan. They all have their own say. I shall bring up a vote tomorrow with the people. For now, stay the night you are welcome to stay at our in free of charge."
