Chasing Snow – Chapter 8

Demetrius

When Ivry took Payton to the bathroom that was when I put the sleeping drug in her drink. I felt absolutely horrible for what I had done. Throughout the rest of the dinner Ivry seemed to become increasingly drunk. If I didn’t know why it would have actually been funny. On our way out I carried Ivry and received many congratulations and welcomes from the other elders and guards. I nodded and said my thanks and walked off to our room while all the while Ivry ran her finger up and down my chest and buried her face in my neck. I had to make sure that I wasn’t going become too flustered to forget my mission. When I laid her in the bed she pulled me down with her and I couldn’t help but to kiss her.

We laid there for a while kissing as she giggled until she yawned and said, “We should… we should get some sleep.”

She collapsed against the bed and was already in a deep sleep. I kissed her forehead in goodbye then quietly left the room. I went out to the front courtyard and saw that Lucas and Ann were already at my car waiting for me.

“Are you ready,” I asked Lucas and he nodded his head as he showed me his backpack.

Ann looked at me for a moment then hugged me and said, “Please be careful, Demetrius. Ivry is already going to be mad that you did this. If you die she is going to kill me.”

“Don’t worry. I will be fine,” I laughed.

Lucas and I got into the car and drove off leaving Ann standing alone in the night. There was an awkward silence as I realized that Lucas kept staring at me as I drove.

Finally I got tired of it and sarcastically said, “See anything you like?”

“Oh, sorry, my lord.” He stammered. “I just haven’t spent much time with you alone like this and for some reason I couldn’t stop staring. I swear I’m not attracted to you or anything.” I couldn’t help but laugh at him as he stumbled over his words.

“It’s okay, Lucas. We don’t actually know much about each other, do we?” He shook his head and I shrugged and said, “I guess now is as good a time as any.”

I drove onto the highway heading south and saw that the moon was full and it was a cloudless night. I released my breath and began to tell Lucas my entire life story. Every bit of my life I looked over and told him all the up to the present. I was amazed to think about how much I had changed from before. When he finished Lucas was obviously amazed, it was written all over his face.

“You have had a very eventful life,” he said. “Mine hasn’t been nearly as interesting.”

“Why don’t you tell me anyways,” I said kindly. “We still have a long drive till we reach the Indum clan.”

“Okay. Well to begin with I was one of the few born a vampire. In my clan the treated me like a prince because I had “pure blood”. Though being born from a vampire my aging hasn’t exactly been stable.”

“What do you mean? How old are you?”

“I’ve only been alive eight years.” He said softly.

“No way!” I yelled in disbelief. “You look like you are 18!”

“I know. I only looked like a child for maybe the first four years of my life. I stabilized aging when I looked fourteen. Now I think I have just stopped. When I was with my clan they always trained me to use my powers and how to defend myself with a variety of weapons. That section I was never really good with, but I was really good when it came to hiding and stealth. Many times I would skip out on my lessons and hide somewhere as I read a book trying to learn more about the outside world. Through one of those books I learned about gods and goddesses of legends and of how vampires came to be. It also spoke of the Lord of Shadows and their strengths, that’s one of the reason I follow you, besides the fact you saved my life. My life was calm up until a couple years ago when one of our hunting groups found a vampire girl hurt and lost and brought her into our castle to recuperate. It was the red haired devil Zoey, but at the time we had no idea how dangerous this girl was. We allowed her to live with us for a while until she was well enough to leave. Throughout this time I felt that something was off about this girl, but no one listened to me. The day when she was about to leave she revealed her identity and told us that she served the King of the Underworld. She spoke of the war that was brewing and how we should join her side. Our leader denied us any part in the war by saying that we wanted no sides. We wanted to live peacefully. Zoey didn’t like that. She turned into this demon and ripped our leaders head off in front of all of us. Some of us attacked her while others, like me ran. I knew that we wouldn’t be able to fight her. I hid and ran as I heard the screams of all of my friends and family that she slaughtered for no reason. I was able to hide long enough to be the last surviving person, but not to be unfound. She found me and impaled me with a spear made of some dark mist then left me there to die. Luckily you came along and found me before I kicked the bucket and healed me. Ever since I have been serving you as your guard.

I listened intently and was angered by how easily Zoey was able to murder an entire clan of vampires.  “Thanks to you though,” he continued. “I have had a better life now than I had before. I have trained in my hiding and have been able to look about the outside world. I think my skills are good enough to be an assassin or something.” He laughed, but I was still in deep thought.

“Do you miss your family?” I asked him bluntly. He was taken aback by the question and looked saddened.

“Of course I miss them. I’m only eight. I want a family.”

I looked at him for a moment and thought of how alone I felt when I was in Valahant after my parents died. Lucas was such a happy person I didn’t want him to be corrupt by loneliness.

“How would you feel if you became part of my family?” I asked him. His eyes widened in disbelief. His true age showed through his expressions.

“What do you mean?”

“Do you want to be part of my family? Ivry as your mother, Payton as your little sister, me as your father. I know it’s not the same as your blood family, but it’s better than nothing.”

He quickly turned his head to the window and wiped his face. He was crying but didn’t want me to see. “That would be amazing.”

“Well welcome to the family, Lucas Chander.”
