toxic

if someone
tells you
you hurt them
you don't get
to decide
that you didn't

if someone
tells you
you're toxic
sometimes
you don't need
to get so defensive

just hear her out;
after all
it takes two
to tangle,
it takes two
to untangle,
it takes two halves
to make a whole,
and
it takes everything
to make things work.

put your ego aside,
step down your defence line,
keep your lips pursed,
open your eyes wide
and for a moment,
listen.

think.

recall
the things you did,
replay
the words you said,
reminisce
the good,
the bad,
the days that passed.

ask yourself
are you in the wrong?
have you placed yourself
before anyone else?
have you seen
the fake smile plastered
across the other person's face?
have you realized
the pain
you had afflicted
upon another soul?

sometimes
our pride
pushes us
to yearn for
the power
to decide whether
we're at fault
or not
but we forget
we are humans too;
you and me.

we need to humble
ourselves,
put down
our pride for once,
think about how
we treat others;
we might
not have
a say
in who hurt us
but we have a say
in hurting
the people around us.

—you can be toxic to the people around you too.
