Maya shifted, yawning as she hit the ringing alarm clock. Usually, she would sleep in, but motherhood had taken a toll on her sleeping routine.

She sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes before rolling herself off the bed and stumbling towards the kitchen to fix breakfast. At 9, she yelled for Lucas to wake up and hit him awake with a pillow, ordering him to wake the kids up.

They were spending their weekend in Lucas' house instead of Maya's for once, so she didnt really know where everything was.

At 9.30, Lilly and Luke ran out of Lilly's pink room arguing about how beautiful or girly her room was. Lucas chuckled, lifting both of them up to their seats as Maya slid the bacon, eggs and french toast onto their plates. She wasnt that bad of a cook, Lucas would admit, though she would beg to differ.

"Then beg." He would always tease, getting a slap on the shoulder.

Lucas stood up to help Maya grab the juices and the coffees before switching on the tv, about to switch the channel to Disney Channel for the kids.

The news popped up, the headline news blaring as the reporter spoke. "Sunshine Orphanage burned down during the night, leaving 4 young orphans, no younger than 10, dead. 7 faculties, including both caretakers and many uninjured orphans left alone with nobody to take care of them. Foster parents are needed before the orphanage is built back up but the suspect to who burnt the place down is unsolved."

Pictures of the orphanage, charred beyond recognition, were played, followed by pictures of the dead, injured and unharmed.

A picture of a blonde headed boy flashed by caught Maya's attention. His bright blue eyes shone with tears and he looked no younger than 3.

A tug on her shirt interrupted her thoughts. It was Lilly. "Mommy, what happened to the little boys and girls?" She asked, bright blue eyes scintillating curiosity. Luke had looked up too, interested, and so did Lucas, trying to see how Maya would handle the matter.

Maya forced a smile. "Well, they're orphans. They dont have Mommies and Daddies. They live in this big house filled with many many friends and they get taken care of by a care taker."

"So what happened?" Luke probed again, not understanding.

Maya gulped, not knowing how to approach the subject to their innocent minds. "Somebody burnt their house down... some of them did not survive... some of them are hurt, and some are left with no home, no food, nobody to care for them."

Lilly immediately pouted at her words, her eyes shone with concern. "Isnt that sad, Lukey?" She asked, as Luke nodded, following her suit.

Lucas grinned at their empathy. "Well, why dont we go and check it out? We can help one of those little kids by taking care of them until their house is rebuilt."

Maya almost performed a double take at his words, almost choking, while Luke and Lilly cheered, not really grasping the depth of the situation.

Maya would love to help, of course, but Lucas was too much of a moral compass. The child would be traumatised, afraid. What if she destroyed the little boys life even more with her reckless parenting?

Lucas seemed to know exactly what she was thinking. "You'll be fine. Besides, we may not even get to foster him or her. We'll see."

So at 12 in the afternoon, with a tote full of blankets, clothes, and one of Lilly's unicorns and Luke's trucks they insisted on bringing for the children, the family set off, Lucas driving toward the site.
