The caretaker looked stunned. "Are you sure? I just said-"
Maya spoke as Lucas picked Levi up, who looked to weak to even struggle, though he did look afraid.
"Excuse me miss but you have no right to speak about a child like that. He's three. He wasn't given any chance, any at all, to show himself. You caretakers probably don't even pay attention to him. He's so thin. Are you sure he's been eating? He's so dirty, do you not wash-"
Lucas stopped Maya, clamping his free hand over her mouth, sensing that she was going out of hand. Maya glared at him. "Im not done, Huckleberry."
The caretaker surely was though. She glared heavily, arms akimbo. "Fine. Want him? Keep him. But don't say we didn't warn you."
With that, she flicked her hair and walked off while Lucas left a very confused and upset Levi with Maya to find the other two. Luke was found talking to two orphan girls his age, offering his juice boxes to them while Lilly was at a corner patting an orphan baby to sleep.
By the time Lucas had returned, Levi was in hysterics, no matter how much Maya tried to console him. He was afraid and confused. He wanted his sister. But Maya wasn't gonna leave him here no matter what. They were abusers.
So, they signed the papers where everyone had given Maya pitiful looks, thinking of the kid that would bring her and her family so much trouble, before they packed up and returned home in the car, Levi sitting on Maya's lap for the time being. He had been cried out when they hit the driveway of Lucas' apartment as Maya went to put him on the spare bed in the spare room.
They had a talk with the kids.
"Hey mummy?" Lilly had asked. "Is Levi gonna be with us forever?"
Maya and Lucas both shared a look, unsure of how to reply. "Well, Lilly," Maya continued, "Do you want him to? Luke?"
The kids had, too, shared a look. "Would you be mad, mummy, if I said no?" Luke answered, in the smallest voice.
Lucas was quick to assure him. "Of course not, buddy. We're just thinking, of whether we want Levi to stay with us or not."
"But Daddy I don't want another brother." Lilly answered, slightly whining. Lucas had known she would be jealous, afraid that Levi would take her father from her.
"Lilly," Maya smiled as she pat her head, knowing how she had felt like. "You know, we can live with him until his orphanage is rebuilt, then we will see if we still want to keep Levi. How's that?"
Luke and Lilly looked at each other, unsure of an answer. "Okay..."
As if on cue to wrap up the discussion, Levi started wailing and screaming from his room, and both Maya and Lucas shot up to console him. Luke and Lilly had simply covered their ears and frowned.
