Chapter Four

~Callum~

I couldn't believe it. Even minutes after she had left I still couldn't believe it. I have finally found my mate.

When I first laid eyes on her, everything changed. The sunken mood I was stuck in had instantly vanished. Her scent had completely enveloped me and called out to my Wolf.

Through the entirety of the interview, my Wolf had been clawing at my mind, wanting control, wanting our mate. It had been making it hard to concentrate let alone have a decent conversation with her.

I couldn't blame my Wolf entirely either though. I had wanted her just as much, maybe more.

Nothing could have prepared me for this moment. Even though I had longed and dreamed of meeting my mate, nothing could have compared to this. The intense feeling of lust flaring through me had caught me off guard immediately. And when we touched hands, I had wanted to latch onto her, hold her close. I almost had but her frightened look had me releasing her.

I was also slightly surprised to find that my mate was a human. It wasn't unheard of but I had always thought of my mate being a Werewolf like me. It didn't matter to me anyways though. She was still perfect in my eyes and nothing would change that. Of course, our meeting would have taken a different turn if she was a Wolf.

I had to shake off those lecherous thoughts before I made myself uncomfortable.

At the end of the day when Marie finally asked who would be taking her position, she seemed surprised when I said it would be Adalyn Sumptor. Since she was also a Wolf, I informed her that she was my mate and instantly Marie had been bouncing with joy for me.

Back in my office again, the ringing of my phone startled me. Instantly I answered and heard Connor's voice on the other end. "Well? How did it go?"

I knew the real question though. Did Adalyn get the job or not? "Yes, the job is hers," was all I could say. I really didn't want to hear his 'I told you so' attitude.

"Thanks for doing this. You won't be disappointed. She is a fast learner and a hard worker," he said adamantly.

Of course now that I figured out what we were to each other, I didn't care about her work ethic. I don't even remember talking about work when I was interviewing her. All I cared about was getting to know her.

"She's probably going to be mad at me." Instantly I perked up as Connor said that. "She told me she didn't want me to interfere and wanted to get a job on her own."

Well I am certainly glad he interfered or she might have been working for someone else. Just the idea had my Wolf rising up.

"So how do you know Adalyn anyway," I questioned darkly. I knew Connor was married with a few kids of his own but I couldn't help but question his intentions with my mate.

"She is my niece's best friend," he supplied happily. "I think of her as apart of my family."

I wanted him to elaborate more but I didn't know how he would react to me asking for personal details on her. "So you say she is an amazing worker. What about her personality or background?"

It was silent on the other line at first until he said, "She really is an amazing person. She is very respectful and will do you right."

I narrowed my eyes in annoyance. That's not the answer I wanted. "What about her home life or any boyfriend," I prodded.

"Why? Are you planning on fucking your new PA," he questioned defensively. He obviously didn't like the idea of it and I could feel his protectiveness.

"Not at all." Yet. "I just want to make sure I hired the right person."

I heard Connor sigh before he answered. "She had a pretty stressful childhood from what my niece tells me. That's why she originally came to me for a job. And when she lived here she was dating some guy. I assume it ended when she flew to New York."

My fists clenched immediately as my form tensed at the thought of another man touching her. "You got a name?" As a Werewolf and head CEO, I've had to get my hands dirty a few times. When it came to protecting my family and company, I took the necessary steps.

"I can't help ya' there Callum. I actually don't even know the guy's name because it was really none of my business," he said suspicious of my intentions and hinting at me to leave it alone. It was probably for the best that I didn't know her ex-boyfriend's name.

Though it felt wrong to do, I ran an extensive background check on Adalyn right after I ended the phone conversation. I didn't know if Connor was acting or if he truly did not know anything about her personal life. I didn't really care. I'm going to find out anyway.

But to my frustration, the background check didn't really help at all. I learned how many siblings she had along with her transcripts. It of course showed her recent resignation from Connor's building. But we touched almost all of this in our appointment. Except for getting sent to the hospital when she was five for a broken ankle, there was practically nothing on her. It irritated me.

She seemed hidden, like she was okay with being in the dark. I noticed that during our interview. Especially when I kept talking about her personal life, she kept pulling back mentally. It was obvious to me that she was a very independent person and would work better behind a desk without someone standing over her.

That was good for this job. Save for dealing with setting appointment times and meetings, she didn't really have to socialize at all. She'd probably be okay with it too if I'm reading her correctly.

Now if she really is as good a worker as Connor says she is, I won't know till Monday. If not, then I just hired an under qualified woman as my PA just because she is my mate. Which I am okay with but if she could actually do the job then it would be a bonus.

"Mr. West? Celia was wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner."

And that was the another problem. Celia. How was I going to break this to Celia? Quickly coming up with a lie I said, "Tell her it's not a good night. I'm feeling worn down."

I didn't enjoy lying to her cause besides how I've been acting towards her presence, I do like Celia. But I like her as a friend. I think we were both settling for each other until our mates came around. And now that mine has, her's has yet to make an appearance.

I know I have to tell her the truth, but I couldn't face Celia tonight. The next time I see her though, our relationship is over. I can't nor do I want to choose her over Adalyn. And I won't.
