Chapter Five
~Adalyn~
"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit," I mumbled under my breath as I rode the elevator up to the 85th floor. I was fidgeting in place and moving from one foot to the other.
It was my first day and I decided to be ten minutes late. I blame my heavy sleeping and the fact that I don't have a real alarm clock. But I still can't freaking believe it. How could I let myself be late? This is a once in a lifetime chance and I already messed up on my first day.
But this was the first time I had ever been late to work so I guess I've got that going for me.
As the platinum doors slid open, I started a fast paced walk that slowly morphed into a jog. "I'm fired, I'm fired. Oh god I'm gonna' get fired," I kept mumbling under my breath.
I mine as well call that secretary from Vanderbelt and beg for that job interview back. Yesterday, I had received a call from Vanderbelt, which is also a good company, for a job interview as a receptionist. Since I was obviously working at Wolven Industries at the time, I turned them down while also thanking them for their time.
Now though, I was probably going to have to call them back and beg for that opportunity again.
As I practically speed through the hall and when I finally came into the open room, I bulldozed straight into a thick body. Even though I was moving fast and pushing my whole weight into the person, I was the one that bounced back. The figure didn't seem to budge. No, the only thing that moved was me onto my ass and the coffee cup the person was holding in their hand.
Wincing as I landed hard on my rear, I looked up to apologize when I met the eyes of my boss. My body didn't know how to react at first. It actually took me a few seconds to realize what I had just done.
With my mouth hanging wide open in mortification, my gaze slid down his face to his chest where the front of his white button up had been completely stained brown. I had just made my boss spill his morning coffee all down the front of his white shirt.
Then everything clicked, as if the wheels had started spinning in my head once more. Jumping to my feet instantly and ignoring the aching feeling from my butt, I covered my mouth with my hands while apologizing profusely. I had no idea whether he was upset or okay with the situation but I honestly didn't know what to do besides apologize. What could I do?
"I am so sorry Mr. West! I can go out and buy you a new shirt right now," I said the first thing that came to my mind. This plus my tardiness; I knew I was getting fired now. "What size shirt are you? I'll go buy on-"
"Are you okay?" Unlike what I was expecting, his expression wasn't angry. He actually seemed concerned.
"Why wouldn't I be? You're the one that got hot coffee split all over you and your asking me if I'm okay," I said shocked. I was expecting him to make me pay for the shirt and then get the hell out of his building.
Completely ignoring my concern for him he said, "You landed pretty hard. If I was paying attention I would have grabbed you. Are you okay?"
Flushing brightly while nodding my head I said, "Yes! I'm fine." Maybe this will make him forget that I was supposed to be here at seven and not seven-fifteen.
He threw away his now empty cup in a nearby trash bin before he faced me once more. I was surprised and almost gasped out loud when he held me close by my arms. "Are you sure," he asked me adamantly. He was so much bigger than me that he intimidated me greatly.
