Chapter Eleven~

~Adalyn~

"Callum, I need to leave."

He immediately pulled me closer with an arm wrapped around my shoulder. We were sitting on the leather couch for our lunch break that had ended at least an hour ago but he was refusing to let me leave.

When he started kissing my cheek playfully, I started laughing while trying to lean away. Finally I just held my hand up to block him. "Callum," I said sternly. "You don't pay me to just sit around and keep you company."

Callum grabbed the hand I was using to block him and tightened his grip. "I just might start doing that," he whispered to me when he leaned impossibly close.

We immediately started kissing and I felt his hold on me loosen as he became enraptured by our embrace. Taking my chance, I shoved him back and stood with a victorious smirk.

Gathering my belongings, I glanced back at him. Callum was merely staring at me with a pout. "You and I both have work to do," I reasoned.

When I was about to exit his office I was whirled around. It seemed he had finally got off the couch.

His arms cinched around my waist and pulled me into his firm chest. "What are you doing tonight?"

I took a second to think before I shrugged. "Probably nothing unless I can bring myself to pack," I supplied.

"Pack?" Callum's brows furrowed in confusion. "You're leaving?" I thought I heard a soft rumble in his voice but I must have been mistaken.

I chuckled as I smoothed my hands out against his suit-covered chest. "Well yes I am. It is to my understanding that you have a business trip to Texas. I thought we left on Saturday," I raised my own eyebrow.

The look on his face was almost humorous, like he couldn't believe he forgot.

"Oh dear, Mr. West," I clucked. "What would you do without me?"

"I would die."

The retort had been so swift, so serious that I stiffened. His deep, blue irises darkened slightly as they penetrated my own. My heart clenched at his words even though what I had said was meant to be a joke. Why would he say something so somberly? I wasn't being earnest.

I cleared my throat uncomfortably and looked for a way to diffuse the tension. "So if I wasn't doing anything tonight, what would you suggest?"

His solemn expression disappeared. "We could go get some dinner after work," he proposed. "I'll take you to my favorite burger joint."

"I'll need to go home and change first. I don't want to walk around in business clothes."

"Okay, I'll drive you home to change and then we'll go out."

"I can walk Callum. It's no big deal," I grinned happily but awkwardly.

I don't know why, but it was something about favors that unsettled me. I always feel like I'm freeloading when people do things like that for me and it made me feel uncomfortable.

His features became stern at my response and I instantly felt my mood dim a bit. "You know I don't like you walking around the city at night, Adalyn. I'll take you home so you can change and we will leave from there." The demand was clear.

I smiled shyly before nodding. I was turning away to leave again when Callum spun me back around to give me a quick peck on the lips. No matter how fast it was, it still left me dazed though.
