Chapter 2: revelations
The next morning Sauli walked into his homeroom. He saw Mr. Lambert setting at his desk rummaging through some papers. He took a seat in the same desk in the back as he did the day before. Bryce was already seated, also in the same desk as the day before.
“Hey.” Sauli said to Bryce.
Bryce ignored him and looked the other way. It was still a few minutes until class started. Maybe Bryce wasn’t talking because he was working on something. Sauli decided he would wait until the end of class to talk to him. The short twenty minute homeroom period went by in a flash. It went by a little too fast for Sauli’s likings. Now he wouldn’t be able to see Mr. Lambert until the last class of the day. When the bell rang everyone rushed out of the classroom. Sauli followed behind Bryce.
“Hey man. Do you mind if I set with you at lunch again today?” Sauli asked.
“I don’t think we should be friends.” Bryce replied coldly and walked away.
Sauli hadn’t expected him to say anything like that. What had he done to make Bryce not want to be his friend? He was utterly confused. Bryce and his friends had been so nice yesterday.
Sauli went to his locker and then proceeded on to his first block class at a slower pace than the rest of the kids in the hallways. He sat in the same desk in this class too and so did Bryce. The sluggish, boring teacher came into the classroom and shut the door behind her as the bell rang
“Get back with your partner, the same one as you had yesterday. I’m going to pass out your pre-tests so you can see how you did. Most of you did pretty good for just coming into the class.” Mrs. Robinson Said.
Sauli wasn’t so happy to be partners with Bryce this time. He felt very awkward. He waited for Bryce to scoot his desk over like the other kids were doing but he didn’t. Sauli started to scoot his desk toward Bryce’s but Bryce inched farther away? What was going on?
“What’s going on with you? You were cool with me yesterday and today you’re completely opposite. What did I do to make you so mad?” Sauli asked.
“We all know about you now. Why would we want to be friends with someone like you?” Bryce replied.
“Quiet down. It’s time to go over our pre-tests!” Mrs. Robinson said loudly.
The room got silent except for the teacher’s boring voice reading off the answers. Sauli couldn’t focus on what she was saying. He just kept wondering about what Bryce meant when he said everyone knew about him? What exactly did they know about him and where did they find out about it? After the teacher was finally done reading off the answers she went back to her already messy desk to look over her lesson plans. People in the class began to chat silently among each other but Sauli stayed quiet.
“Why didn’t you tell us yesterday that you’re a fag?” Bryce said.
Those words went through Sauli like lightning. His heart felt like it had sunk into his stomach. That really hurt his feelings. Everyone back home in finland knew he was gay and they were fine with it. He thought he had gotten over the part of his life where his sexuality had caused him problems. He was speechless.
“If you didn’t want anyone to know, you shouldn’t have had it on your facebook. ‘interested in: men’ gave you away.” Bryce said.
