Chapter Five: Yojimbo

"Where am I?!" I cried out, pressing my hands against the sides of my head as I frantically looked around.

This was absolutely impossible, even I knew that...

Well actually, if going back in time, traveling through space, fighting giant mutants, battling brain aliens trying to take over the world, and sprouting wings is possible... Then isn't anything, really?

"But how could I end up here??" I asked myself, mind overcome with bewilderment.

"The last thing I remember is falling asleep... So this much be a dream! Phew, that makes more sense." I let out a sigh of relief, letting down my guard as I became more relaxed.

Still thinking it would be cool to explore this dream world, I further studied my expansive surroundings. Usually there were at least some people or animals in my dream, but my main goal was to find out what this dream could be about. It was so real feeling, that it made me wonder if it meant something more...

No, I shook my head at my idea. This is just a more realistic dream, that's all!

As my eyes were scoring the horizons on all sides of me, I spotted a few smoke trails seeping into the sky. They weren't too far into the forest, maybe just a mile or so. It must be a village or something!

At least, I imagine it would be a small place if they're using fires during the day, and so many means there's less of a chance that it's just a couple people camping.

This must be an old fashioned dream, maybe even all the way back in the 1980's!

For a moment I was weary of the fact that I would be around so many humans, if that's what they would be. But I caught myself, reminding my brain that this was simply a dream and nothing more; there was nothing to hide from here.

I hesitated for a few more seconds, still slightly unsure, but finally shrugged and decided to go check it out. I set a quick pace down the hill and swerved around on an invisible trail, cutting over streams and going around trees and other natural obstacles.

When I got to the entrance of the thicker forest, I realized that a river was blocking my path. It didn't look too deep, but still I decided that I would rather try jumping across instead.

But before I could carry out my plan, a flash of pale green caught my attention; just several feet away from me, a strange creature was drinking the water. Curious as to what type of animal it was, I turned and carefully watched it, quickly determining that it's lack of claws and sharp teeth meant no danger.

The small animal reminded me of a miniature dinosaur, maybe more of a lizard. I felt an urge to name it's species myself, but a distant tug at the back of my mind made me feel that it already had a name that I knew of. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember anything.

Still, I smiled as I crouched down and held out my hand. The creature immediately perked up, snapping it's head towards me and watching with unblinking eyes.
