Chapter 37- Sharlene
We begin to walk along the right side of the hall because it has less connecting hallways. Thomas begins to lead but eventually I find myself in the front leading the pack. The halls are deserted. If it wasn't for the odd sound of a gun being fired and the sound of mourning screams, it would look like a normal night. But it isn't a normal night. There's people dying behind every door we pass. More and more lives lost every second that goes by. There's nothing we can do about it. Not until we get some weapons. Suddenly the lights turn off. The only light in the hallway comes from the odd skylight in the ceiling. We all stop walking and bang into each other.
"Why did the lights turn off?" Amy whispers.
"The Outsiders wanted an advantage." Thomas explains from his power.
"What does that mean?" Amy whispers.
"It means they're going to start walking around." I tell them. We continue to walk, but faster. As we walk I think about how handy living with my dad has been for me. Besides the fact that he would terrify me and my sister and sometimes even my mom, I'm surviving this war because of him. Things he has told me have been quite useful. Hopefully it will continue to be this way.
Finally we reach the training room without being spotted. Just as I'm about to turn the doorknob to enter, Coren grabs my wrist to stop me.
"What if someone's in there?" He asks.
"Well, I guess there's one way to find out." I say turning the doorknob. I'm stopped by Coren's hand on the bottom of the doorknob.
"Use your power." He tells me. I begin to give into my power. Slowly trying to find something, anything. But I can't find anything.
"I don't think anyone's in there." I admit.
"Are you sure?" Coren asks me.
"I don't know!" I whisper as loudly as I can.
"Thomas, is there someone in our training room?" Amy asks him getting frustrated.
"No." He says slightly smiling. I give Coren a look. A look I hope he takes as 'I told you so'.
"Just open the door." He says. As soon as the door's open we pile in, quickly shutting the door behind us.
"Bryce?" Amy starts looking for him. She searches franticly through the small training room.
"Bryce, are you here?" She tries again. No answer.
"He's not here." She says. I'm not sure to who though.
"He's not here yet." I try to calm her. She looks at me and nods. We spread out in the training room, not knowing what to do.
"Well, we're going to need to see first. So, find some flashlights first?" Coren suggests.
"Don't bother." Amy says, shooting a ball of light from her hand into the middle of the room. It's a small ball of yellow light, but there's enough to light up the whole room.
"Alright, weapons it is then." Coren and Thomas head toward the weapon closet.
"Crap, there's a code!" Coren shouts. Everyone stares at him. Could he really be that stupid?
"Thomas, what's the code to our training room closet?" I ask him.
"Three, three, seven, nine, one." He answers me. Coren punches it in. The sound of the big metal latch moving behind the door tells us it worked. Coren turns back to look at us with an embarrassed look.
"Honestly, why do we even have powers?" Amy asks as she walks away toward the table. I follow her. She sits down in a chair and faces the door. I sit down in Steve's seat and look at her.
