Chapter 45

"We need to clear all of you out, you need to leave!"

"We can't just leave, he's our best friend!"

"Get him ready, give me the paddles!"

"We'll get a nurse in here you have to leave!"

"Charged, go!"

"Clear!"

Zap.

"He's not back yet. Again!"

"Charging!"

"Kids you have to go, you can't stay in here! Nurse!"

"I want to stay with him!"

"Charged!"

"Clear!"

Zap.

"Go again!"

"Okay we're leaving, just let Nicki stay!"

"Fine but the rest of you leave!"

"Charging!"

"Is he going to be alright?"

"There's no telling, please stay back."

"Charged!"

"Clear!"

Zap.

"Dammit! Go again!"

"Joey please come back!"

"Charged!"

"Clear!"

Zap.

"Okay, okay, he's fine. We got him back."

"What the hell caused the seizure?"

"No idea. Ask Dr. Rivera."

Dr. Cameron promptly leaves the room with Nicki following behind him, shouting at him to come back. I follow Nicki as she passes me from my stance right outside the room and grab her so she doesn't end up body slamming the poor doctor.

"Dr. Cameron wait, please!" Nicki cries.

I see him stop and his shoulders fall. He turns around and looks at the two of us; me holding Nicki back so she doesn't ram him and Nicki probably looking like someone told her she was dying. In a way she just nearly lost Joey.

"I don't know what to tell you, Miss McKay, I have to speak with Dr. Rivera. She'll most likely know what caused the seizure. I have no idea what it could have been."

"Please," she begs. "Let me talk to her?"

He lets out a long breath. He then finally nods and I let go of Nicki as she follows the doctor down the hallway and out of sight.

I breathe a long sigh, some from relief and some from lack of air. I didn't even realize I'd been holding my breath the whole time. Clark's hand finds mine a second later and I look down at it and then back at him. "Hey," he whispers. "Are you okay?"

I scoff. "Yeah. Peachy. Perfect. Fine. My best friend was just without oxygen for thirty seconds. He was dead for thirty seconds. How the hell do you think I feel?"

Clark's eyes glisten with past tears. "Did you forget that you were pronounced dead for nearly five minutes on Christmas Eve? And they brought you back. Somehow they brought you back. How do you think I felt - how all of us felt?"

"But it's different Clark. You didn't watch me die. My appendix burst while I was alone. I passed out and then it burst."

"But you were gone for longer than Joey. It's not different, Alex. It's exactly the same. We couldn't do anything to help you then, and we can't do anything to help Joey now. We just have to trust the doctors are doing everything they can to help Joey."
