"Milan!" I groaned. He just snored. I grunted and shoved his shoulder sleepily. "Wake up you hockey puck!"
"Dax, why the hell are you waking me up at 2:00 in the morning?" Milan mumbled.
"You stole my blankets! I'm freezing!" I whined. He semi-threw the blankets my way.
"Wouldn't it just be easier to cuddle?" he sighed, his voice still laced with sleep.
"I guess," I yawned, and I brought myself closer to his massive body. I put my head on his chest, and he put his arms around me. "You're so warm. Probably because you stole my blankets," I commented. He rolled his eyes.
"Shut up, Dakota."
I curled up closer to him. As I was about to fall asleep, I heard,
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
"Milan!"
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
"Dakota!"
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
"Milan!"
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
"MILAN? DAKOTA? OPEN THE DAMNED DOOR!"
"You gonna get that?" I mumbled into his collarbone.
"Yeah. I guess."
He got up, leaving me in a sea of comforters and fleece blankets. I heard him open the door.
"Hey, Looch. You and Dax having fun?" the voice teased.
"SHUT UP!" I yelled from the bedroom.
"Whaddya want, Raskal?" he groaned sleepily. Ah, it was Tuukka.
"I just stopped by to tell you that Bergy got in a car accident."
"Oh shit," I heard Milan swear. He was awake and alert now; so was I, for that matter. "How bad?"
"I dunno, but he's at Rhode Island Hospital," Tuukka replied. I jumped out of bed immediately and pulled out a sweatshirt and jeans.
"I'll be over as soon as possible."
The front door shut, and Milan's massive figure came frantically into the room. He flipped on the light and went into the closet.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asked, crossing his arms. "You should really get some sleep." I grabbed both our phones, shoving them in my sweatshirt pocket.
"You'll be damned if you think you're going alone," I laughed. "Besides, what are you, my mother?" I threw Milan a black Hennessy Whiskey shirt and a pair of jeans. He just sighed and changed. I went into the kitchen, groping around the counter for a pair of keys. I just happened to grab the keys to the Audi.
"Milan, I'll be in your car," I called. I went outside into the car. I put the keys into the ignition, but got in the passengers side. Milan came out seconds later, hopping on one foot and pulling on his right sneaker. He looked unkempt, his dark brown hair messy and un-gelled. He got in the driver's side and put on his seatbelt, backing out of the driveway at an unsafe (and quite frankly sickening) speed. The car squealed as he gunned it down the road.
"Car accident," he muttered. "A car accident? A car accident. Bergy got in a car accident."
"It's ok. We've been to RIH plenty of times. We'll be there soon," I soothed.
"A car accident. He got in a car accident!" he exclaimed frustratedly. He slammed his palms down on the steering wheel.
"Yeah, and so are we if you don't get your emotions in check! Pull over," I instructed.
"No...gotta...hospital," he muttered.
"Milan Lucic, pull this car over now," I commanded. He pulled over to the side of the road. "Let me drive."
"No. No! We're wasting time," he shook his head. I put my hand to his large arm.
"Milan, I'm serious. You're freaking out too much. Calm down baby. Just let me drive," I pleaded. He begrudgingly unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. I did too. As he walked by, I got up on my tiptoes and kissed him.
"It's gonna be fine."
I got into the driver's seat, and Milan the passenger's seat. I gunned it down the road, and before I knew it, we were in Providence. I hadn't noticed that Milan had turned on the radio until I heard the music that flowed softly from the speakers.
When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
"Fix You by Coldplay," Milan smiled. But I didn't smile, even though his smile was usually contagious. "I love this song."
"I know," I nodded, drumming my fingers on the steering wheel. I looked firmly out the windshield; I didn't want to look at Milan possibly breaking down. My chest was constricting and my heartbeat was pounding. All I should have been focusing on was driving, but this goddamn song was really pissing me off.
