THE CO - WIVES

CHAPTER 25

JAMES'S POV
John and I passed by Joyce's house... Sorry my other house. John had became part and parcel of my life. He went everywhere with me. He drove my car. He literally became my driver.
He had told me severally that my life was also in danger but I always brushed it off as mere allegations.
He made my life his business.
He was determined to  nab the criminals and bring them to book.
He still insisted that Joyce was one of the major suspects that's why he advised to stay away from her.
As usual, Joyce was st home with the kids. She was delighted to see me home. However, our mission was different.
John wanted to question her. She brought us some drinks as John began talking...
"Madam, have you ever thought of hurting Jackline?"
She was taken aback by that question.
She made herself comfortable on the couch and eyed me suspiciously.
"Yes, not once, not twice.... But I have never done anything to hurt her. I would never bring myself to hurt her... Why should I?"
"When you were attacked in the ward, did you see the assailants?"
"They were masked therefore I couldn't see their faces!"
"Have you ever thought of harming your husband?"
"Damn! What's with the questions OCS? Do I look like a killer to you?"
'" calm down madam. I am just doing my job."
"Then you are doing it in the wrong place. Invite me to the station and I will record my statement from there, not my house! Got it?"
With that, she banged the table and left us wondering what had came over her.
We drove silently to the mansion, each of us occupied in their own thoughts.
John made it his daily business to drop me off to work.
He always insisted I sit at the back seat as he drove to the office. He had a mission in his mind. A mission to prove to me that someone was after my life. They only passed through Jackie to prove a point.
One such morning, as he did his usual dropping then droving back to the station in my car, some masked goons blocked his way. They landed upon him with blows and kicks, lucky him, he had learnt karate at kiganjo therefore he overpowered them, got back into the car and took his pistol. It's like they sensed danger because they drove off in a panic mode. Unfortunately, he didn't record the number .
He immediately called me and told me to be on the look out because the goons were determined to kill me.
That reality threw me into panic mode.
That evening, we passed by Jackline's place. She was recuperating well, and her plaster had been removed. She looked jovial as usual and we made our usual jokes. I had warmed up to her and I was ready to propose immediately all these issues were over.
Her mum was an hospitable woman and she always made it easier for me to communicate with Jackie. Sofar, nobody had followed Jackie into her house and we thought finally she was safe.
We ate supper at her place and went home to my mansion. John had some bruises on his face but he had passed by the hospital for treatment.
"You have to be extremely careful James. Those goons are out to finish you up. If it weren't for my  karate classes, they would have overpowered me and most probably killed me."
"What do you suggest we do John?"
I asked him, obviously curious.
"I will continue driving your car, let them bring themselves and  I will kill them one by one."
We toasted and continued with our merry making. The following day was a Saturday therefore I wasn't going to the office.
We drank till wee hours of the morning. John was reporting to work by noon but he didn't seem to care.
I was woken up by john, biding me goodbye, promising to see me later in the day. That day he didn't take the car, he preferred to use a matatu but I called the cab guy to drop him off at the station.
Later in the day, I received a call from Joyce, asking how my day was. She told me the kids were okay and they missed me a lot. John had warmed me against driving myself to anyplace therefore I asked her to put them on the phone. They were happy to hear from me and I promised to see them the following day.
Monday was here, and I braced myself for the job.
I asked John to drop me at my other company because I had neglected it so much, though I had an able general manager who updated me on everything.
He dropped me and he drove off to the station.
Job had proven to be too much that day therefore I requested him to go and see how Jackie and her mom were fairing on.
He was more than glad to do so. After the call,
I buried myself in the computer, doing very important stuff. I didn't notice that the time was moving pretty quick.
It was already evening and nightfall was fast approaching. John was yet to come for me and I had phobia for cabs.
I tried calling him but his phone wasn't going through. I wondered what was happening. I didn't remember that  I had sent him to check on Jackline, at least I would have called her.
I paced up and down the office. I was worried. The coward me couldn't bring myself to call a cab! Hell no! Not when my life was in danger.
"Hey am here!"
The OCS's voice brought me back to life.
"What took you so long John? You scared the shit out of me!"
"See who is scared! Anyway, my phone's battery died and I had no power bank, nor charger to boost it. Here I am now, let's get going."
I gave out a heavy sigh.
A sigh of relieve.
John took to the wheel and drove towards the mansion.
