THE CO - WIVES

CHAPTER 29

Jacky's POV

I called my bestie Beka, we hadn't talked in a while and I felt guilty. There was so much going on and I had to fill her in. We decided to meet at Westlands at a joint that had opened up recently and catch up. She had promised to pick me up. She had been married and her hubby had died in an accident so it meant her taking care of their little girl alone. She wasn't so lucky to get good in-laws. That had taken everything her hubby had left and kept them to themselves not caring about the young daughter.
Beka had tried fighting them in court and the fight proved futile. The in-laws were already wealthy and considering that they had also taken what was Richard's they were filthy rich. Beka had started a mutumba business which had picked very fast. She was a lovable person and so social that everyone just had a soft spot for her. The in-laws were unhappy about Beka rising so fast and had tried taking her daughter away. This time Beka had fought with all she had and had won against them, restricting them from ever seeing her or even daring to come near her little girl. She was my agemate but had been married early.
Her business was so good that she was already in a position to have her own house, and was driving the latest Audi. She picked me up and headed to westlands 40 40. It was a lovely place, the ambience was beautiful. As we entered I noticed two afamiliar faces. "Who is that?" I asked myself. "That looks like Jannie but unfortunately only their silhouettes can be seen. How about we go nearer and see?" Beka voiced as got nearer. When I saw them my heart skipped a beat. Jannie? James? I pulled Beka back, not wanting them to see us and sat close to them. From there we could hear their conversations. James was telling Jannie that he was sorry for everything that had happened and would like to make it up to her so that she can forgive him. Jannie on the other hand was saying that its really taking too long before he puts a ring on her finger. She was ready to be his second wife.
"But you know we have to take things slow. After everything that has happened to you we really wouldn't want people after you because of the announcement?" James tried reasoning.
"I can always take care of myself Jimmy, cut me some slack men!" She snapped at him. James was shocked. Never had I snapped at him and never did I ever call him Jimmy. He looked disturbed but didn't voice the concern. I asked Beka what I should do and she told me to hold on. Luck was on my side as she was recording everything that Jannie was saying.
She told me to text mum to come as soon as she can. A witness would work well. I was at first furious with James but now I really didn't know how I felt. She continued talking and we continued sitting there listening to their conversations. She tried so hard to bring James to get engaged to her. James on the other hand was becoming more and more uncomfortable. He excused himself to go the the gents and later out a bit to breath some fresh air. Instead of going out he stood at the balcony looking outside. My eyes followed him and saw where he stood. After about 20 minutes we saw mum come inside and trying to locate us. "Quickly, let's hide." Beka told me and she swiftly stood up and his behind one of the pillars. Once she got to where Jannie was she said hi and asked her whether she had seen me. Jannie said no and actually told her that we had agreed that she should meet up with James because I was kinda busy. Little did she know that we had met with mum a few hours back.
James came back to the table and said hi to mum, smiling and all and feeling relieved that at least someone had come to his rescue. One could see the relief on his face when he saw mum. He began trying to catch up with mum as he stole glances over Jannie.
"I see you have finally met Jannie. What do you think of her?" Mum asked as she looked at James.
