My Only Scale (Ikuya x Reader)

I was never the type to talk to people, so people around me assumed that I was just being hostile and that I need to lighten up a bit. I was just shy, I didn't know what to say to people, expect swimming. I loved the water, everything felt so clear. I felt like staying there forever. Thus I joined the swim club in middle school as their manager.  Some people thought it was weird. That was because I was a mermaid and I couldn't be in the water.

I always thought that I would never fall in love with a human until that day. Back at the shoe locker area, I replaced my school shoes with my regular ones.  I heard a lot of snickering and laughing. I turned around and saw a group of girls surrounding me "Everyone say "hi (Y/N)". "Hi, (Y/N)!" The rest of the group said. I didn't answer their "genuine greet". The leader of the group approached me "you think you're special, huh?" She slammed me against the wall "Being in the swim club with a lot of hot shirtless guys, what's your game ?" I avoided eye contact "I-I don't get what you mean."

"Oh come on! I saw how you were eyeing Natsuya Kirishima" She crossed her arms "A girl like you will never have chance with him". My eyes widened "W-what I-I don't I...". "Oh, save it!" One girl passed a water bottle to the girl in front of me "Let's see if you can capture their attention with this" I shivered in fear because my secret was about to be revealed. If a mermaid ever got wet, their human legs would turn into a tail fin. What if they found out the secret? I would lose my chance at making friends. I didn't know how to fight, so I let fate decide. When I closed my eyes, the girl in front of me was about to pour water on my hair. I heard water spill but I didn't feel soaked. "What do you think you are doing?" I heard a boy's voice. As I opened my eyes, I saw Natsuya's little brother, Ikuya Kirishima, holding the girl's arm. We were in the same classroom. My eyes glowed by his heroism, I had this sudden feeling in my heart.

"Shot! It's Natsuya's little brother, let's go!" The girl exclaimed and ran away with the group. Ikuya was joined by the rest of his teammates, Haru, Makoto and Asahi. "Are you okay, (Y/N)?" Makoto questioned with concern. I nodded "I-I'm fine". "I swear if Natsuya's fan girls won't stop, we have to talk to the teachers" Asahi exclaimed.

Ikuya's eyes were on me, he rubbed my shoulder with comfort. The touch was soft and warm, I felt shivers down my spine. "I should thank him"  I thought. I opened my mouth but I got interrupted "Oh, we gotta go to swimming practice!" The red head facepalmed "Nao is gonna kill us!". "(Y/N), are you gonna join us?" Haru asked me. I shook my head "I don't feel well today so I decided to head home" I explained "The notes are with Nao, okay?" I felt a hand on mine, it was Ikuya, my heart skipped a beat. "Do you want me to walk you home?" Ikuya proposed. My cheeks turned red by his kind gesture, it was a sweet offer but I lived in the ocean. "It's fine, Ikuya" I kindly declined "It's nothing serious." I said my goodbyes to the swim team and walked to the nearest beach, where my home was.

I took off my uniform, left with my (F/C) swimsuit. I hid my school stuff near a boulder where no one went. I jumped into the water and turned into my original form. It felt good to be under the water again, all the stress went away. I swam down to my shell, where I usually sit, sleep and think. This time, I thought about Ikuya and how his touch was so gentle and sweet.

Honestly, I felt a warm feeling being close to Ikuya. From having lunch together to watching him swim during practice. I wanted to feel close to Ikuya, he may be shy but he is a kind person. "Could this be what humans call 'love'?" I asked myself. I was maybe grateful to Ikuya for helping me with the bullies. " I should probably give him something to express my gratitude" I thought to myself. I thought about making lunch for him but I couldn't cook, pearls from my shells but it was too girly for him. I swam around to find more ideas until I saw some of scales from tail fin were falling on my giant shell. "Maybe ..."

It was the day of the medley relay, I put my scales in one of my tiny shells. Back home, it was known to "be close with someone". So, I decided. I caught with Ikuya before he went to the charging room. "Hey, Ikuya hold on." I said softly. Ikuya stopped and turned to me. "What is it, (Y/N)?" he asked. I was a bit hesitant but I showed him his gift "F-For good luck... and a thank you another day". Ikuya took the shell and opened it "What are these?" Save my soul. "M-m-mermaid scales?". The green haired boy gave me a confused look but looked touched by the gesture. "Thank you, (Y/N), I'll treasure it" My heart skipped a beat when he accepted my gift. "Ikuya, let's go!" Natsuya called his brother. "Oh gotta go." Ikuya leaned in and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. He ran to the changing room, leaving lovestruck. I noticed his face turned red before he left. For once in my life, I started smiling...

~Bonus~

Years later, Ikuya and I got close enough to hold hands. Even though, he had up and downs but I was there for him, along with Hiyori. Once, I went into his apartment I noticed, he still had "the Little Mermaid" book. "You still have that book, Ikuya?" I teased. "You know it's one of my favorites" Ikuya looked away embarrassed. "About mermaids, (Y/N), where did you get the scales from that day?". He still kept it. I lay down on his bed giggling "It's a secret I'll tell you later".

I felt him hovered above me "Don't be a meanie." He put his forehead on mine, he felt a bit cold because he got back from swimming practice. We stared into each other's eyes, his red eyes was full of passion and tenderness, I could stare it for hours. Suddenly, I felt his lips on mine. It took me time to give into the warm feeling, I wrapped my arms around his back while he cupped my cheeks. He pulled out to look into my eyes again "You taste like the ocean" he said so sweetly. Such a romantic. "Well, you taste like chlorine" I giggled. "You liked the kiss though" he tried to tease back. "I did, but I would love for you to take a shower!" I giggled at his frown face. Maybe I'll tell him someday.
