After three months of not seeing each other and just communicating through occasional letters, the Evans sisters were finally reunited.
"So, how was your summer with Marlene?" Irsi asked, with a broad smile as soon as they pulled apart from a tight hug.
"Marlene's mother is the best." Lily said as she and her sister made their way toward the Prefects' compartment once more. "And she makes this chocolate cake... Dear God, Iris, is almost better than yours."
"Well, I'm glad Mrs. McKinnon didn't take my first place at least." Iris giggled.
"Oh, no." Lily shook her head, walking over an empty seat and sitting down. "No one makes a chocolate cake like you, Irie. I don't even know what it is, but I don't care. It's great."
"It's love."
"Oh, hush. You don't love, Irie. You don't have a heart for it."
Iris gasped, pretending to be offended and pushed Lily slightly. The girl laughed and Iris smiled. She missed her laugh. They've written to each other during summer, but with Iris at Dorcas' and Lily at Marlene's they didn't really have the time to do it every day.
"And how is your heart?" Iris asked after a few seconds, looking anywhere but her sister's eyes.
"I'm fine." Lily sighed, and also looked away. They didn't have the guts to talk about something as sensitive as that without crying. "I saw him today, before finding you. He looked at me and seemed to want to come, but then Avery came along and pulled him away."
"Oh..."
"He wrote a letter." The older twin kept going. "He said he never wanted to hurt me and that he missed spending the summer with me."
"Did he?" Iris whispered. She looked down at her hands and bit her lip. "And what did you respond?"
"I didn't."
Iris' head snapped up. She looked quite surprised at Lily and, suddenly, burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?" Lily asked, pretending to be mad at her sister, but failing as a smile made its way to her lips.
"I don't know... Just... I guess I didn't expect that from you."
Lily groaned, pressing her hands to her face.
"I'm a terrible person, right?"
"Of course not." Iris smiled gently, pulling her hands away and causing Lily to look at her. "I would've done worse."
It was Lily's turn to laugh. When she opened her mouth to say something else, she tilted her head to the side, looking at something over Iris' shoulder. Noticing her sister's sudden interest in something that wasn't her, Iris turned around. She gasped as she saw him.
He was even taller than last year. Sure Iris had grown too, but only two inches. He seemed to have doubled his size. He was easily over six feet tall. A few more scars appeared across his face and neck, but that one that went all the way down his right eye to his neck was still there, as was her own scar across her nose from Severus' jinx last year.
"He's looking at you." Lily's voice snapped her out of her trance and she turned to face her sister. "Of course, you're looking at him too, so it's alright, I guess."
"Shut up." Iris rolled her eyes and Lily frowned.
"You talked right? Aftre... That, I mean?"
"No, we didn't."
"Not a letter?"
"Be quiet!" Iris hushed, looking around to make sure no one heard what the conversation was about. She leaned over to her sister and whispered: "No, not a letter. He didn't write me."
"Why?" She responded in the same tone, their faces inches apart.
"I don't know. If I didn't I wouldn't be..."
"Can I sit?"
At his voice, Iris froze, gripping her sister's hands for dear life.
"Remus." Lily smiled up at the boy as Iris looked down. She smirked slightly at her sister as Remus also looked away from her. "Sure. Sit. We don't bite, do we, Irie?"
Iris turned to glare at her sister and Lily giggled.
"Have a seat, Remus." The younger girl whispered.
The boy nodded and moved over to the empty seat beside Iris.
"So... How was your summer?" Remus asked, as he finally sat down beside Iris.
Against her own better judgment, the girl looked up and when her eyes met his, she blushed, the freckles on her face that more evident against her rosy cheeks. The last time they've been that close...
"It was... Hum... It was good. Yours?"
"Alright." He shrugged. "Nothing new."
There was a moment of silence and Lily groaned.
"Mine was alright too, Remus, thanks for asking." She said.
"Sorry, Lily." He mumbled and she laughed.
"It's alright." She waved a hand in front of her face to show she wasn't mad. "There're the new Prefects from Fifth year. I'll go talk to them."
"Lils..." Iris pleaded. She tried not to show how desperate she was for not being let alone with Remus, but her whiny voice clearly gave her away.
"I have to, Irie." She smirked at her sister and sent her a wink. "I'll be back before you notice it."
And then she turned around and left. Iris watched her go and as soon as she stopped walking, stopping in front of a Gryffindor boy and girl to talk, she didn't have an excuse to not look at Remus.
"And how are the boys?" She asked, turning to face him.
At the mention of the school's troublemakers, they both smiled and the tension between them vanished.
"They're alright. Already planning some things to do over the year." He chuckled and Iris shook her head.
"Will they ever grow?"
And after that, the usual comfortable and fun aura that always surrounded the two came back and they kept talking and laughing together. Eventually, Lily, tired of talking to the younger kids, turned just in time to see her sister with her legs thrown across his lap and throwing her head back in delight as Remus' eyes shined and his smirk only grew as he admired the girl next to him. Lily smiled.
Maybe she hadn't had luck on love. But maybe, her sister would.
