"Sometimes, I think I'm cursed. Because of something that happened before I was even born. You see, a long time ago, there was this family. The papa, was a musician. He and his family would sing, and dance, and count their blessings. He also had a dream...to play for the world. And one day, he left with his guitar. And never returned.
"And the mama? She didn't have time to cry over that walk away musician. After banishing all music from her life, she found a way to provide for her daughter. She rolled up her sleeves and learned to make shoes.
"She could've made candy, or fireworks, or sparkly underwear for wrestlers. But no...she chose shoes. Then she taught her daughter to make shoes and later, taught her son in Law. Then her grandkids got roped in. As the family grew, so did the business.
"Music had torn her family apart, but shoes held them all together. You see, that woman was my great great grandmother, mama Imelda. And her little girl, shes my mama coco"
"Hola mama coco." i greeted her with a kiss to her cheek.
"How are you julio?" she asked me, a slight shake in her body.
"Actually, my name is Miguel. Mama coco has trouble remembering things, but its good to talk to her sometimes.""I used to run like this!" I lift my arms and legs slowly. "But now, I run like this is just way faster!" I say, running faster, making maria who was standing behind mama coco, braiding her hair laugh.
"And the winner is...Luchadora coco" I shouted as I jumped onto the feather pillows on the floor. Maria laughed, placed her hands around her mouth and quietly shouted,
"Go mama coco.""And I have a dimple on this side, but not on this side. Dimple, no dimple. Dimple, no dimple." I pointed to my cheeks, my entire family sitting at the dinner table, abualita walking around the corner with a plate of tamales.
"Miguel, eat your food" Abualita said running her hand on mama cocos head. My abualita? She's mama coco's daughter. "Aye, you're a twig mijo, have some more" she said as she put more tamales on my plate.
"No gracias." I answered her shaking my head.
"I ask If you would like more tamales" she looked at me confused as Maria giggled into her cup.
"S-Sí?" I answered in a question, watching as she stacked more on my plate.
"That's what I thought you said" she said enthusiastically. My abuelita runs the house just like mama Imelda did. Absolutely no music. We're like the only family in Mexico who hates music, and my family is fine with that. But me and Maria? We are not like the rest of my family.
"Be back by lunch mijas" mama told us as we raced out the door.
"Love you mama." We ran out of the house, greeting people we know on the way. And of course we fed Dante, my funny looking Dog and Pepe, Maria's white cat who wasnt so white from all the dirt.
"It's not our fault. It's his, Ernesto de la Cruz." We stare up at the large statue of the greatest musician of all time. He started off as a total nobody from Santa Cecilia, like us. He starred in movies. He could fly! And wrote all his own songs. But my all-time favorite is remember me. When he sang, people's heart melted. But that all changed, when he was killed by a giant bell. We wanna be just like him.">>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<
"Aye, kid I asked for a shoe shine, not your life story." The mariachi man said to Miguel as he tuned his guitar.
"Sorry, it's just. We're never allowed to talk about stuff like this at home. My family would freak." Miguel continued shining the man's shoes. Maria sat next to the man petting Pepe.
"What about you?" The man turned to Maria gaining her attention.
"What about me?" She asked.
"Whats your part in the story. Already heard his might as well hear yours. How did you become a part of his family?" He continues to strum and tune his guitar.
"Well, I guess when I was five, Miguel was still a baby, I was at the Rivera home cause my parents were traveling and they were good friends with Miguels parents. When they were on their way back, they got into an accident. They didn't make it. So I just stayed with the Rivera family ever since. And theyve taken very good care of me." Maria explained.
"And what do you want to be?" He turned to her.
"I wanna sing. But of course the Rivera's wouldn't let me" she scratched the back of her neck, looking at her feet a little solemnly.
"She is wonderful at singing." Miguel compliments her, hoping to cheer her up.
"Ha! Yeah right. Youre definitely better than me, especially playing your guitar." She compliment back, playfully hitting his shoulder.
"Really?" The man turned to Miguel enthusiastically. "Show me what you got muchacho." He hands his guitar to Miguel who drops his brushes. "You too. Sing something." Maria looks at Miguel and they excitedly smile at each other. As Miguel lifted his hand and Maria took a deep breath, the sound of a woman's voice shouts out over the crowd. Miguel shoves the guitar back into the man's arms as Maria stands to attention.
"Abuelita." Miguel smiles awkwardly at her as she takes off her shoe and hits the mariachi man, yelling at him.
"Maria and Miguel are sweet little anguelitos and want nothing to do with your music mariachi!" She yells at him as he scurrys away. She puts her shoe back on and pulls Maria and Miguel into her chest.
"You know better than to be in this place. You will come home now." She starts walking away. Miguel sees a flier and puts it into his shoe shining box.
"You need to be careful. That place is crawling with mariachis." Berto advised.
"Yes tio Berto." The two kids said at the same time. Then Dante and Pepe run out to Maria and Miguel only to run off when abuelita throws her shoe at them.
"It's just Dante." Miguel says.
"And Pepe." Maria finishes.
"Never name strays. They'll follow you forever. Now, go get my shoe."
