"Sorry old friend but the show must go on." Ernesto passes Hector and walks out on stage only to get booed and food thrown at him.
As Miguel and Maria fall Dante tries to hold onto Miguel by the back of his shirt but rips his shirt instead. A colorful Pepe, who turned into an alebrije along side Dante, grabbing Maria, but also failing at rescuing her. They continue falling and Hector's photo falls from Maria's pocket.
"No! The photo!" Maria cries as she tries to grab it. When they get too close to the ground, pepita swoops in out of nowhere and catches them. Maria watches in sadness as Hector's photo falls into a small body of water.
They fly back to the top and are immediately taken into a large group hug. Pepita growls and walks over to where Ernesto is. She starts flinging him around before throwing him at a giant bell. Crushing him again like how he died. Hector smiles and stands up.
"HUHH!" He instantly glows orange and falls back down.
"Hector!" Miguel and Maria rush to his side. "Hector! I lost the photo!" Maria cries.
"Miguel, Maria! Its almost sunrise!" Imelda announces.
Maria freezes in pain and falls down next to Hector.
"Maria?" Miguel and her parents call out worriedly. "Whats happening to her?"
Hector grabs hold of Maria's hand and tries to whisper to her.
"Tell him Maria." He finally says.
"Tell me what?"
"I'm dying Miguel. My flesh is disappearing faster than you. It's killing me." Maria tries her hardest to explain.
"What? You can't be dying! Maria please. I can't lose you both." Miguel cries, hot tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Miguel, I give you my blessing." Hector says, taking his unoccupied hand and pulling up a glowing petal. Imelda holds his unsteady hand up higher.
"No conditions." Imelda says.
"I won't let Coco forget you, and we'll go back together. You'll see!" Imelda touches the petal to miguels arm and he finds himself on the shrine floor. He groans and pulls himself up. Looking around, he calls out for Maria. Getting no answer, he cries more, before hearing a muffled groan. Turning, he sees Maria sit up, halfway buried in a pile of flower petals. Miguel sighs in relief before realizing about mama Coco. He grabs the guitar and Maria's hand and they run home. Enriques voice calling for them. Running into the Rivera estate, abuelita blocks their path.
"Where have you been!?" She shouts angrily.
"We need to see mama Coco please." Miguel pleads. He tightens his grip on Maria's hand, which is limp. She sways, almost sickly.
Abuelita tries to grab the guitar from his hands but he dodges and the two rush into mama Coco's room, locking the door behind them.
They turn to see the blank woman sitting in her wheel chair. Miguel looks to Maria and they walk up to her.
"Mama Coco? It's me Miguel. I met your papa. Remember papa?" He pulls out the torn photo and holds it up to her. "See? Remember, papa?"
Maria stares blankly at the woman, in a daze. Miguel continues to try and help mama Coco but is soon cut short when the door opens.
"What are you doing to that poor woman?" Abuelita asks.
"Whats gotten into you?" Enrique asks angrily, and dissapointed. Miguel starts crying and hugs onto his father. Maria sits in front of mama Coco, her eyes glossy and full of tears.
"Maria? Honey what's wrong?" Luisa asks calmly to the blank girl. Maria blinks a few times before she starts singing. Abuelita looks mad and attempts to stop her but Enrique grabs her shoulder. As Maria sings, Miguel grabs the guitar and plays it along with her. They play the song "remember me" just as Hector did which soon makes mama Coco turn to them and sing along. Maria smiles, gaining back her senses. Mama Coco sings the last line solo before smiling wide. She turns to the rest of the family.
"Elena? What's wrong mija?" She asks her daughter who just sniffles and says,
"Nothing mama, nothing at all."
"My papa used to sing me that song." Coco turns to Miguel and Maria.
"He loved you mama Coco. Your papa? He loved you so much." Miguel cries happily.
"I kept his letters. Poems he wrote me...and" mama Coco pulls out a red notebook and grabs a torn piece of paper. She hands it to Miguel who lines it up with the torn photo. Hectors face now being added to the photo.
Miguel stand up and hugs mama Coco.
