The guards pull Miguel outside and then throws him into a cenote. He swims to the to and to the shore inside. Coughing up swallowed water he looks up and starts yelling.
"Help! Please, someone! I wanna go home!" Miguel then grows angry. "Where'd Maria!" He shouts. When no answer comes, he looks down at his shaking and boney hands and he starts crying. The sound of scratching and feet make migemuel look up. He sees Hector walk out in wobbly legs before falling.
"Hector!?" He calls.
"Kid?" Hector looks up hoping to see both kids, but to only see one. Miguel runs over to him and into his arms.
"Oh, Hector!" Miguel dives into Hector's arms. "You were right. I should've gone back to my family. They told me not to be like De la Cruz, but I didn't listen" Miguel rants as more tears roll down his cheeks, soaking his torn vest.
"Hey, hey it's okay." Hector tries to reassure him.
"I told them I didn't care if they remembered me, I didn't care if they put me on their stupid ofrenda."
"Hey chamaco, its okay. It's okay." Hector pulls Miguel back into a hug.
"I probably just ruined Maria's life too. I forced her to stay, and now she probably hates me."
"Chamaco calm down, we'll get out of...HUUHH!" Hector convulces and falls to the ground.
"Hector!?" Miguel reaches out to him in worry.
"She's forgetting me." Hector says, mostly to himself.
"Who?" Miguel crouched down next to Hector as he starts to explain.
"My daughter."
"She's the reason you wanted to cross the bridge."
"I just wanted to see her again. I never should've left Santa Cecilia. I wish I could apologize. I wish I could tell her that her papa was trying to come home. That he loved her so much." He pauses and sniffles back tears. "My Coco."
Miguel looks away from Hector. "Coco?" He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out the photo of Coco and Imelda. He holds it out to Hector who looks at it confused.
"Where did you get this?" He takes the photo and looks at it.
"That's my mama Coco." Miguel points to the baby Coco. "That's my mama Imelda." He points to Imelda. "Is that..." He points to the headless man. "...You?"
Hector looks to Miguel and starts to ask, "we're..."
"Family?" They both finish together. Hector smiles at Miguel before frowning and looking away.
"I'd always hoped I'd see her again. That she'd miss me...maybe put up my photo...but it never happened." Hector looks at the photo and smiles. "You worst the worst part? Even though I'd never see Coco in the living world...I thought at least one day I'd see her here. Give her the biggest hug. But she's the last person who remembers me. Once she's gone from the living world."
"You disappear, from this one. You'll never get to see her..."
"Ever again. You know, I wrote her a song once. We used to sing it every night at the same time, no matter how far apart we were. What I wouldn't give to sing it to her, one last time." Hector starts to sing the song "remember me" as his eyes glaze over to another flashback. After the song ends, Hector slumps sadly.
"He stole your songs, he stole your guitar. You should be the one the world remembers, not De la Cruz!" Miguel argues.
'I didn't write "remember me" for the world. I wrote it for Coco. I'm a pretty sorry excuse for a great great grandpa." Hector sighs.
"Are you kidding? A minute ago I thought I was related to a murderer. You're a total upgrade." Miguel jokes making Hector raise an "eyebrow" at him. "My whole life, there's something that made me different. And I never knew where it came from. But now I do. It comes from you. I'm proud we're family." Miguel looks away and runs to the water, splashing the water with his feet. "I'm proud to be his family!" He yells happily, giving out a long grito. Another grito gains his attention.
"I'm proud to be his family!" Hector yells out. The two yell out as it echoes off the cenote walls.
