"You said you hated musicians. You never said you were one." Miguel points out as they ride a tram car.
"How do you think I knew your great great grandpa? He and I used to play together. Taught him everything I know." Hector strums the guitar only to mess up. He scowls and starts to retune the guitar.
"No manches! You played with Ernesto De la Cruz? The greatest musician of all time?" Miguel laughs sarcastically.
"Greatest musician? Ha, greatest eyebrows maybe, but his music? Eh, not so much." Hector pats Miguel's shoulder.
"You don't know what you're talking about." Miguel smiles and pushes him away playfully.
"Well maybe he does, Miguel?" Maria says looking away angrily making Miguel glare at her. Hector looks between the two friends confused before his attention is brought to the loud music and bright lights below. He puts his arms around the two and happily says, "Welcome to the Plaza De la Cruz. Show time chamaco."
They enter the crowd to make their way to the back with all the other contestants.
"Bienvenidos a todos! Who's ready for some musica?" A woman with large blue hair dances onto the stage, singing everything she says.
"Its a battle of the bands, and the winner plays for the maestro himself, Ernesto De la Cruz at his fiesta tonight."
"Thats our ticket, muchacho." Hector points.
"Let the competition begin!" The woman cheers. One after another, different contestants try to woo the crowd to play for Ernesto.
"So, what are you gonna play?" Hector asks as he looks from Miguel messing with his guitar to Maria as she pets Pepe happily.
"Definitely "remember me". Miguel says as he strums the tune for the mentioned song. Hectors eyes widen and he snatches the guitar from Miguel's hands.
"Nonono, not that one." Hector says staring off into space, as if remembering something.
"Why not? It's the most popular song." Miguel argues.
"Ugh, it's too popular." As Hector says that dozens of different contestants playing or singing "remember me" in different styles walks past. "What do you want to play Maria?" Hector turns to the girl. She thinks for a moment before asking, "Poco loco?"
"Epa! Now that's a song." Hector shouts happily making Maria giggle and smile but also making Miguel glare at her.
"De la cruzito? You're on stand by. Los chocolacos? You're up next." A man with a clipboard says. Miguel and Maria watch as the crowd goes wild when los chocolacos start to play.
"You always this nervous before a performance?" Hector asks as the two sit down nervously.
"We don't know." Miguel starts.
"We've never really performed before." Maria finishes.
"What!? You said you were a musician!" Hector says surprised and worried.
"I am, I mean we will be. Once we win." Miguel says.
"Thats your plan? Nononono, you have to win. Your life literally depends on you winning. And you've never done this before!?" I'll go up there." Hector reaches for the guitar but both Maria and Miguel shout at him "no".
"We need to do this." Maria says hoping he won't stop them.
"Why?"
"If we can't play one song, how can we call ourselves musicians?" Miguel asks.
"What does that matter?"
"'Cause I don't want to just get De la Cruz's blessing. I need to prove, that I'm worthy of it."
"Oh, oh that is such a sweet sentiment. At such a bad time! Okay...okay, okay, okay, you wanna perform. Then you got to perform! First you have to loosen up. Shake off those nerves." Hector shakes himself and rattles his bones. "Sanquelo, sanquelo, sanquelo!" Miguel and Maria copy and shake, the sound of rattling bones coming off Maria louder than Miguel making Hector look at her slightly.
"Now gimme your best grito."
"My best grito?" Miguel asks confused.
"Come on, yell! Belt it out." Hector than shouts out before sighing in relief. "Ah that feels good. Okay, now you." Miguel and Maria try to copy Hector but butcher it terribly and make Dante and Pepe cower in fear and worry.
"Oh, come on kid..." Hector begins.
"De la Cruzcito, you're on now." The man from earlier calls.
"Miguel, looks at me. Hey! Hey, look at me. You can do this. Grab their attention and don't let it go." Hector encourages.
"We have one more act, amigos!" The woman's voice sounds.
"Hector..." Maria calls nervously.
"Dont worry, Maria. Make them listen. You can do this." Hector smirks at her.
"Damas y caballeros! De la Cruzcito!"
