Chapter 16

Sanguine sighed as he wiped up the spilt tea on the countertop. He swore Cain was doing that on purpose, just to annoy him.

"Whoops!" he heard Cain laugh from inside the sitting room.

"Sanguine! I spilt some tea again!"

He sighed angrily. "If you want me to clean, you can at least call me by my first name,"

"Oh," Valkyrie said, surprised. "I thought that was your name..."

"Shut up Sanguine," Skulduggery and Ghastly said simutaneously. Tanith smiled and Ghastly blushed. China sighed. "Please tell me you've asked her out."

Ghastly went from pink to red and China resisted the urge to smirk. Valkyrie glared at China and yelled at Sanguine.

"Where's the damn tea Sanguine!"

"You didn't ask for any!" Sanguine yelled back. Apparently he was a perfectionist and hated when anything was messy or unfinished. That was why he was mopping up. Valkyrie allowed herself to laugh a lot when she found out. Tanith couldn't care less. She still had no clue why the Remnant would go out with Sanguine, of all the psychopaths in the world.

Valkyrie's phone blasted out 'What Makes You Beautiful' (A/N Nice reference, huh? :3) by One Direction and she glared at everyone as they looked, amused, at her.

She picked up the phone.

"Hello?" she said. Tanith looked at her friend. Then Valkyrie's face turned to a look of complete and utter horror, and Tanith's mouth opened.

"Valkyrie! Val! What's wrong?"

The only word Valkyrie could say was, "Mum,"

Skulduggery slammed on the breaks and he, China, Tanith, Ghastly and Valkyrie jumped out of the Bentley. Sanguine was told to wait in the car. He wasn't amused.

"Mum!" Valkyrie screamed. There was no reply.

"So, what happened?" China asked Skulduggery.

"The reflection called Valkyrie," he replied quickly, "and told her that her mother had been attacked and the attacker used magic."

China's hand flew to her mouth. "My God," she muttered.

Tanith heard the crunching of leaves and swung around to see a man standing there, wearing all black.

She leaped up and slid her sword out of her scabbard and pointed it down at the man. She hit the ground and rolled, coming up. She looked at the man and blinked. The sword had went straight through his chest, but there was no blood. He was still standing. Tanith cursed as he pulled out the sword slowly. Skulduggery and China were running over, while Valkyrie and Ghastly were checking the house for Val's mum. Tanith secretly hoped she was okay.

The man in black dropped the sword to the ground and it clattered.

Nuts, Tanith thought.

Skulduggery regarded his opponent warily. He had no bloody clue who this guy was.

China, however, didn't care who he was. She tapped her arm and an etching pulsed yellow for a second. She flicked her wrist and yellow electricity flew at the man. He caught it in his hand and sent it flying back. China cried out as the electricity hit her instead and she fell to her knees. She was shaking violently. Tanith got down to help her while Skulduggery took out his gun and shot.

The bullets hit the man and they definitely went through him, but the man simply picked them up, unharmed, and held them in his hand. Even from where Skulduggery stood, he could hear the metal sizzling.

"Ah," he muttered. "That was a waste of some good bullets."

China got up slowly, clutching Tanith's arm tightly. Her face was twisted in pain. It was obvious she was hurt.

Valkyrie screamed from inside the house and Tanith lifted China up and bolted inside. Skulduggery looked at the man and backed off. The man smirked, and walked away. Skulduggery relaxed, took a deep breath (not that he needed to) and followed Tanith.

They ran into the kitchen and saw Valkyrie kneeling beside her mother's unconscious form, crying, and Ghastly frozen in shock.

When Skulduggery got a closer look he realised what the matter was.

There was a cane beside Valkyrie's mother.

Solomon Wreath's cane.

My internet is down yet again (Yippee -_-) so I might not be able to chat to you guys till... Saturday I think... which makes me SADDDD!!!! D: But I'm sleeping over at my BFF's (Yes, I still say that :D) house tomorrow night and she has internet so I shall see what I can do!! :3 She also has Netflix... Hello, horror movies that mum won't allow me to watch... heh heh >:)
