"Shh Maralie, calm down..." Valkyrie chewed her lip while Maralie cried.
"Daisy is dead," Maralie sobbed, almost in disbelief.
Jessica was taking deep breaths.
Daisy had been shot.
But by who?
Skulduggery came into the room, Kestrel making shooting gestures at his head behind him. Then Skulduggery turned and she stopped immediately.
"Stop," he told her, almost irritably.
"Stop what?" Kestrel asked innocently.
"Guys!" Jessica yelled. "Now is not the time!"
Kestrel hung her head and mumbled a "sorry". Skulduggery folded his arms and didn't reply.
Valkyrie glanced at Skulduggery and he nodded. She was saying Daisy was dead.
Maralie looked at the two of them, her tears blurring her vision. She might be a moron, but she wasn't stupid. Maralie understood immediately and burrowed her face in her hands.
"Why is she so upset? Were they very close?" Valkyrie asked Jessica quietly.
Jessica didn't reply for a few moments. Then she turned and whispered into her ear, "Daisy was Mara's little sister."
Valkyrie froze. Her mouth hung open and she gasped softly.
Daisy was Maralie's little sister.
Just like Valkyrie's little sister was Alice.
Valkyrie shuddered. She understood how Maralie felt, even though Alice hadn't suffered the same fate as Daisy.
She walked over to Maralie slowly. Maralie stiffened, and leaned away. Valkyrie knelt down, and before she even knew what she was doing, she wrapped her arms around her.
Maralie was still for a few seconds, then broke down crying.
"Dai," she murmured. "Dai is gone..."
"I have a little sister too," Valkyrie whispered.
"Really?" Maralie asked, pulling away.
Valkyrie nodded. "She... she's still alive, but Daisy reminded me of her."
Maralie's smile was small. "Your sister must be cute then."
Valkyrie laughed. "Yes, she is. She's one."
Maralie's eye twiched. "She reminds you of your sister, who is one?"
Valkyrie gulped. "Well... Daisy DOES act like a one year old..."
Maralie blinked, then laughed. "I suppose she does."
They both stood up and looked at the others, who were standing with amused looks on their faces.
"Sorry," Maralie sniffled. "I... it's just..."
"It's fine," Kestrel nodded. "We know."
Maralie smiled weakly and rubbed her eyes with her sleeve. "Thanks for understanding."
"I think we need to go now," Skulduggery said softly.
Maralie nodded and clicked her fingers. A ball of light flickered in her palm.
"I'm ready."
