A month of school went by and as the days went on, I hardly talked to Grayson or Ashley anymore, and always spent time after school with Majayla and Brooklynn. As of then, we were all sitting on the concrete sidewalk outside of school, with sodas in our hands, staring out at the dropping sun.
It was nice, I mused, looking over at Majayla and feeling my chest tighten once more. She had this sort of effect on me that made me want to just stare for hours and hours. And not in a creepy way - when she looked at me, her eyes were captivating, and I was forced into looking into them for as long as humanly possible before I realized that I was no longer taking in air. My face would go red when she complimented me or even gave a greeting. When I was in a bad mood, she'd talk to me for hours, and I'd nod and look her in the eyes as she spoke, my lips would tremble in suppressed emotions, for I'd yet to open up to her, though I badly wanted to.
She caught me staring and smiled, her eyes warm and glowing like always. I hid a little grin and stood up. '' I gotta go, '' I said and waved, skipping down the sidewalk. Happiness flowed through every vein in my body, which was odd. Firstly, Brooklynn, my crush, was spending time with me. Secondly, my idol, Majayla, was also spending time with me. What could go wrong?
'' JJ! '' I heard a familiar voice scream down the road. Turning quickly around, I saw Ashley running towards me.
'' What the...'' I mumbled, starting towards her. She reached me, and crashed into me at full speed.
'' Ayden, '' she panted, '' he's been attacked! ''
☯☯☯
'' Hurry, hurry! ''
Ashley hurried me along the flickering corridor of the MS-13 base, her grip tight around my wrist. The rebel in me wanted to shove her away, but this was her boyfriend that was hurt. No way I'd do that. We got to a large doorway with paint all over it. She led me in and, on the floor, was Ayden Sellers. His dirty blonde hair was matted and caked in dirt. His tall body was curled up on the floor, blood pooling around him as he held his stomach. I chewed the inside of my cheek. Seeing him made me nervous. '' Why'd you show me? '' I asked, ''I'm not a doctor. ''
'' Sure you aren't!'' she seethed, shoving me forward. My shoe slid into the blood and I pushed my tongue to the roof of my mouth, tasting bile. Slowly, I kneeled down beside him, going into my backpack and pulling out a numbing needle.
'' Please don't hate me for this, '' I whispered, and briefly, he opened one eye and nodded at me before squeezing them both shut again. I emptied the contents of the needle into his stomach and got out tweezers. There were bullet wounds. I slowly picked out shards of bullets, noticing how Ayden held his breath as if waiting for the pain to hit. '' It won't hurt, '' I stated, '' you're numb. '' With a big piece of cloth that I ripped from the bottom of my shirt, I cleaned away most of the blood, getting out string, a sewing needle, and alcohol. I poured the alcohol onto the wounds and sewed him up. When finished, I patched up the wound and stood up, shaking slightly as I felt the warm blood seeping through my pants where my knees were. He looked up gratefully at me.
'' Told you, '' Ashley said, smiling nervously. I leaned down and helped Ayden up, helping him stand. We went to his room, with Ashley trailing behind, and I picked out clothes for him. Ayden and I went to the bathroom and leaned him over the sink as he sat in a chair. I turned on the sink water and moved the knob to hot water, running it over his mud-caked hair. Not wanting to say anything or ask about it, I untangled the thick mass of blonde hair with my fingers and rubbed in shampoo and conditioner. This felt quite weird, considering I didn't even know Ayden well enough to be washing his hair. Biting back an amused smile, I rinsed out the shampoo and conditioner and blow dried his hair, cleaning up water that spilled.
Next, I got a wet, soapy washrag and cleaned his dirt-covered face, being gentle but efficient at the same time. We then got out for him to get dressed, and he came out limping. '' Thanks, '' he said in a pained, deep voice. I nodded, blushing only out of embarrassment.
'' No problem, '' I felt an odd tingly feeling in my hands. Looking over at Ashley, I realized she was completely in love. Then again...so was I.
