How were we to decide?
We pondered momentarily.
Then, you whispered,
"Flip a coin."
And so I took a
Rusted
Copper penny
Out of my pocket,
Counted to three in my head,
And tossed it up high.
The penny glinted through the rust as
It spun down through the air.
It almost seemed to move
In slow motion.
And finally,
It landed with a faint thwack,
Hitting the palm of
My small hand.
I slapped it onto
The back of my other hand,
Took a deep breath,
And looked at it slowly.
"Tails." I said
With a soft smile.
You had promised
To buy me
Ice cream,
And to eat it with me
On the porch
As we watched
The sun disappear
Slowly,
Talking about the things
We cared about back then.
And you were honest,
As honest as children came.
You kept your promise,
And I could've stayed
In that simple moment
Forever.
