"Make it quick Naya, I gotta be back down in a bit." Ray tells me and I scoff.
"I think I'll take my sweet time, thank you." He rolls his eyes at my attitude he remembers all too well. "What in the hell are you doing here? Last week you arrive at Zayn's mansion out of nowhere. You almost blew my cover you know? This is too risky, he's not an idiot and I haven't worked this hard for you to"-
"Good god, would you be quiet and let me explain?" He interrupts, with his hands gripping my shoulders. I push him away lightly and cross my arms against my chest. "A couple of months ago Iris felt like you weren't checking in with her as much as you used to, so she had one of her microphone chips placed in your bag the last time you saw her." He explains and my heart stops for a second.
"What?!" I feel so lightheaded I take a seat on one of the couches and run a frustrated hand through my hair while cursing myself for being so dumb. All the things I said and did, she was listening the whole time.
"Naya, listen to me. The second I found out I had one of my guys break into your car and destroy the chip. She probably thinks you found it and destroyed it yourself." He says quickly. My head is pounding even harder than before. I don't know why Ray helped me. Him being Iris's right hand man, she would have him killed if she ever found out.
"She knows about Zayn's undercover drug empire but not the details. Right now she's in Chicago taking care of some business there but she's having me act as one of Zayn's dealers to keep tabs on you.""Shit- Naya why didn't you tell her about the drugs?" Davina hisses at me and I don't know what to say.
"I- I was going to but then..." I begin but she starts to scoff.
"Please don't tell me you're falling for him. Naya this is so big, this is the biggest Iris has ever assigned you to. Do you really think that man out there gives a crap about you? He'll put a bullet in your head without thinking twice if he finds out that you're a mole." Davina scolds me and I can't help but feel like a complete idiot. "After everything we've been through you'd think you learned a lesson or two about not getting attached!"
"Alright back off Davina, that's enough." Ray steps in when he notices my eyes tearing up.
"I can't even look at you right now." She shakes her head before walking out.
Ray takes a seat next to me and runs his hand up and down my back. His touch instantly calms me down and I look down at my hands in fear and desperation. "What do I do?" I sob helplessly.
"Anaya look at me." He grabs my face in his hands. He's the only one who calls me by my full name, and I can't help it when my heart flutters. "Stop crying and take a deep breath. I'm going to handle this, all you have to worry about is keeping up appearances. Don't let him suspect a thing." He shushes me. "I hate to say it but Davina is right. Please tell me you don't care about him."
"I don't." I lie, looking up at his eyes.
"Good, now if I were you I'd watch your back from now on." He tells me before smiling reassuringly and I nod.
Ancient feelings erupt within me at that moment. He always managed to make me feel better when I'm down, he still cleans up the messes I make even though I treated him like shit when we were together. What did I ever do to deserve him? Seeing him after so long was harder than I thought.
"Thanks Ray, seriously I don't know what I'd do without you." He looks down at me and his eyes focus on my lips. For a second I think he's about to kiss me but he just hugs me tight. I know I shouldn't be upset and I'm walking on thin ice, seeing as Zayn is right downstairs and I've been gone for way too long.
I fix my makeup and gather myself together before walking out and leaving him behind once again.
