Chapter Five:
“Braids.”The large, rusted door that lead to the courtyard of the old building creaked open as (Y/N) embraced the afternoon sunlight. She breathed in the natural fresh air of the pine trees that she had grown to be so fond of for so long. Her gaze scanned the yard, watching few of the youngest playing in the grass, others tending the garden, and a few just lazing around on the fine autumn afternoon. Finally, her eyes pinpointed its target as she headed over to a group of three that sat by the wall near a small flower bed.
A gentle smile graced her features as she watched the sight before her. A young child that went by the name Marcy could be seen braiding Marlon’s shaggy blonde hair while arguing with, what seems to be, a pouting Louis.
The childish argument was cut short when interrupted by a greeting of the said female that made her way to them, “Hey guys!” The new voice caused them all to break the previous conversations and look up from what they were doing. Marcy’s expression softened as a relieved yet foreign glint glossed over her eyes as she watched (Y/n) join them, being the first of the three of them to greet her first. “(Y/n)! Where did you go? You missed out on lunch!”
The pre-teen female gave an apologetic smile in Marcy’s direction as she sat down in the luxurious green grass and crossing her legs to sit comfortably. “Yeah, you disappeared on us for a bit there, everything okay?” the voice of Louis spoke up as he looked over at his friend, who shrugged his worry off. “Sorry to have worried you guys, especially you Marcy, but I wasn't feeling good. Since there wasn't anything for me to do I uhhh.. went to lie down, yeah, that's its, I took a nap.” (Y/n) explained, stumbling over her rushed words as she tried to come up with an excuse. As much as she was against lying and hypocrites, she didn't want to have the youngest of them to have unnecessary concerns about the upcoming mission. Keeping it quiet until it was just herself, Marlon, and Louis.
Louis cocked a brow at his friend's nervous like behaviour, glancing over to Marlon to see if he noticed anything. Only to find Marlon in a state of understanding as he seemed to believe the explanation and nodded to her words.
“Well at least you’re feeling better now, right?” Marlon asked. This caused (Y/n) to perk up eversosloghtly as she energetically nodded with a large grin as she responded. “Yep! Much better, must've slept wrong last night, that's all.” she laughed lightly in attempt to brighten the mood. Which seemed to work perfectly as Louis saw Marcy returning to her original duty of braiding Marlon’s hair.
Louis smiled as he watched (Y/n) engage into conversation with the other two as they talked about anything that could’ve been considered eventful that happened during lunch.
“So what lead to having Marlon get his hair braided?”
“His hair is to long it's unbearable.”
“Hey! I'm right here ya know!”
Louis laughed at his friends misery as the girls continued to tease his shaggy hairstyle before joining in himself, after all, his dreadlocks needed to be tightened at the roots again.
“What about my hair Marcy!”
“But your hair is sooo boring!”
The dark male puffed his cheek out as he pouted once more, “Okay, rude much.” he commented as he placed a hand over his heart as he overdramatically reacted to her words. Earning the all knowing eye roll of annoyance, yet her body betrayed the mask of annoyance as she released a soft snicker. “Not changing my mind, dofus.”
Louis opened his mouth as he prepared himself to remark, only to be cut off by other male. “Why not have (Y/n) do your hair Louis?”
Everyone turned their gaze to Marlon as his lips shifted into a small smile, which was boarding a smirk. Louis furrowed his brows as he suddenly felt lost at the sudden suggestion as he stared at his best friend dumbfoundedly. “I mean..I'm not professional when it comes to doing dreadlocks, or any other hairstyle for that matter, but I have done your hair in the past.” (Y/n) cursed herself mentally at her uneasy words as she spoke.
“Oh, uh, yeah sure. That would actually mean a ton…”
With that said, the female moved herself to rest on her knees as she say behind him. “I...I can’t reach that high..” she mumbled embarrassedly as she slowly grew upset with her height, for she was slightly shorter than the male in front of her.
This brought a mischievous smirk to cross Louis’s face as swiftly, and practically, threw himself backwards and into her, hitting and leaning against her with his back. The action startled her as she swatted at his shoulder. “Don’t do that so suddenly! This isn't the game ‘trust’ you know!” The grin on Louis’s face only grew wider as he closed his eyes, “Well you caught me.”
A faint scoff could be heard from the female, who now slightly hovered above him as she crossed her arms over her chest. “Well, we were already on the ground, not much of a fall if you ask me.”
“That was pretty awful.”
“Pretty lame if you ask me.”
The other two joined the conversation, agreeing with the said female who grinned in a way that meant she was declaring her victory in the argument in her own peaceful, silent way. Louis huffed out as he opened his eyes, hoisting himself to sit up properly as he stared at the other two. “I wasn't talking to you two, but oh come one guys! Your words wound me!”
This time, everyone rolled their eyes at his overdramatic lines. (Y/n) lightly shook her head as she patted her legs. “Lie down or else I won't do your hair.” without wasting another second, Louis shifted his body so that he could lay down; his head and shoulders resting on and against her thighs comfortably. Her delicate fingers running through his dreadlocks as she, one by one, worked on each lock of his dark hair.
The four of them eventually grew quiet, though it wasn't awkward or tense, in fact, it was calming as the occasional wind drifted throughout the courtyard on the sunny autumn day.
Even if they were in an apocalyptic world now, they all could agree that at this moment they felt consent as their skin soaked and bathed in the warm rays of the sun.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, (Y/n) especially knew this as her mind drifted back to the mission. Wondering who would be on it, where they were going, and every possible scenario of what could go wrong with it. What if-
“Done!”
Marcy’s cheerful voice broke (Y/n) out of her dreading train of thoughts as she looked over to Marcy and Marlon. Marlon’s hand was dragging over the tight braids of his hair as he felt the unusual hair style while Marcy stood next to him with her hands on her hips in a triumphal stance. The two exchanging words at Marcy’s handiwork caused the female to smile at the scene. Unknowingly to her, Louis has long before opened his eyes to stare at the freely drifting clouds above. Only to be captivated by the sweet expression she wore as she watched the others. A smile he wished was permanent as it lit up everyone's hearts that saw, her eyes sparkled with hope and carewith each reflection of light.
This, for as long as he's known her for, was one of the few things that he promised himself to make a goal of seeing everyday. If he has to be the funny one of all the survivors, to keep her and everyone else happy and smiling, then so be it.
It was a role that he was willing to take.
