Chapter Sixteen:
"The Broken Lock"

[CURRENT]

The sun was high in the sky, passing midday as the hours grew nearer and nearer to the fast approaching dinner. Once Clementine had fixed the final trap within the area, she couldn't help but to notice something that didn't quite match the surroundings of the dirt path. Kneeling down as her fingertips grabbed the small, white like cylinder, only to take note that it was a rolled up piece of paper that had one of the ends charred. She thought back to those she had met as she wondered who in the school smokes, though she had yet to meet any one who does.

She tucked it away into her pocket as she turned to the others who had also finished up within the area. Aasim holding up two above average sized rabbits as he approached the group. "It's not a ton, but it's something. Let's hope the fishing group had a better chance with their catch." Brief murmurs and nods of silent agreement were shared amongst the young adults and one child as they headed further down the path to catch up with Brody and Violet.

It didn't take long for the hunting group to reach the shed, only for the four of them to notice something wasn't right.

AJ being the first to speak up as his small feet pushed into a simple jog over to something on the dirt ground. Clementine hot on his trail as she stroded over to him, peering down to see what he had found. "Look, a Monster." He commented as he turned to the approaching female.

Clementine light brown eyes scanned the rotting corpse before her sharp eyes narrowed at the spear that stuck out from the walker's head. Planting her boot on it's forehead as her fingers gripped the long wooden struckture, she yanked it out of the deceased face. Flipping the weapon around to have a better view the the sharp tip to check if it was damaged.

"That's one of our spears."

Clem turned to face who spoke, seeing that it had been Louis as he walked over after checking the riverbed for the Ericson girls. "Vi would never leave that out in the open." His eyes grew ever so slightly wide as he stated his friend's absent actions. The four looking over one anothers faces, all slowly thinking the worst, that is until Aasim spoke up. "You guys stay here and find the girls, I'll take these rabbits back to Omar for dinner tonight, I'll come back if you aren't back by sundown." He said, earning nods of understanding as he turn towards the trail and made his way back to the walled off school.

Clementine turned to glance at AJ before looking up to Louis, "Lets check the shed." She said with a tilt of her head towards the structure to emphase her statement. Louis moved first as he made way up the old, creaking stairs, only to pause as he fiddled silently with the door.

"Ah shit..." He cursed under his breath to himself before turning to Clementine and AJ who now were approaching the stairs. Holding up an old lock, "The lock has been jammed and broken, this is not Violet's or Brody's job, we may not be alone."

The female's brown eyes widened as she swiftly pulled her knife from her jacket and stalked up the few steps, looking over her shoulders to see if AJ was prepared. Her suspicions were confirmed as he held the handle to his gun firmly, yet pointed to the ground as he awaited for word as to what to do next. Clementine reached the door and slowly pull it open, peering into the room the further the door opened. Only to see it had been ransacked as supplies were gone, the fire place had been recently put out, but most importantly, no people.

"Holy shit... this place is wrecked. Dammit, it looks like all our supplies are gone." Louis murmured aloud as he walked further into the shack, his eyes scanning the room before growing anxious as he started to shift from one leg to the other. "I'll take a look around outside, hold tight." He told the two before running outside with he signature weapon, Chairles.

"Are we in danger?" AJ asked as he moved to stand next to Clementine, his eyes staring up at her with concern. Clementine looked around before glancing down to the kid in her care, "Maybe.." she trailed off as her gaze move from AJ and to the recently burning fireplace. She took a few steps towards it while crouching down to examine it, as she did so, resulting in the female to find another man made cigarette, one hand made out of a bible page.

As she opened her mouth to say something to AJ, the door was pulled open, revealing Brody and Violet.
"Clementine?" The blond asked as she and the redhead next to her entered the shed, gazing around the new mess of the building. "What the hell happened in here?"

"Do any of you smoke?" Clementine hastily answered rather than reaponding to Violets question about the current state of the shed. The female blinked before shaking her head, "Nope. Nothing for us to smoke." She said, both their eyes trailing to Brody who now was cursing as she grew panicked.

Before the girls could say something, Louis reentered the shack, "No sign of our theif."

"Theif?"

"Oh shit, we just walked up stream to check our traps, but all of the traps were empty, all gone, nothing." Violet explained her's and Brody's findings.

"We were robbed?!" The redhead exclaimed as she began to pace in her spot, cursing to herself while murmuring a series of nothings in attempts to calming herself down. "I have to tell Marlon about this." She told the group while turning to face the others in the room for a moment before rushing out to head back to the school.

"Well, we can't go back now, our group barely caught enough for two people, let alone the whole school. We need to find something or else we'll starve." Louis spoke up as he crossed his arms, thinking to himself while looking to the girls for any suggestions.

At this, Clementine pulled out the map Marlon had given her of the general area, walking over to the table as she layed it flat on the hard surface. Lifting a finger as she pointed to a couple of small, trailer like buildings outside the designated safety circle. "AJ and I were looting this place before we crashed. There was a floor filled with jars and other supplies. Unfortunately the owners had rigged it with a trap, but I'm sure most of it had survived the blast." She explained.

Her explanation earned a look of worry from the two companions, Violet and Louis looking at eachother for reassurance for what they were about to agree upon.

"Alright, lets do this."

Hey guyss! I say this in every chapter, I am not giving up on this story. I love it to much to do so. Just these past couple of months have been busy with graduation, exams, projects, moving and so on. Now that school is over, I will be starting work soon. Although, it's a a job where I have a more free schedule to actual write something compared to my school schedule.

Hoping to write a few chapters this summer, though no promises.

Besides that, hope you all have an amazing summer! And congrats to those who graduated this year!

Also,
