Chapter Fourteen:
"A Mourning Soul."

[PAST]

The wait being short once Louis, Valerie, and Nora, began to hear the faint and fresh sounds of footsteps, thundering before them. A flash of a familiar tall figure with shaggy hair turned the corner, gun drawn, while sprinting at full speed. He waved his hand wildly at the waiting group as he shouted curses for them to move.

Frozen in confusion, Nora finally broke out of her stance as she clasped a hand to Louis' and Valerie's shoulder as she shook them roughly. "Get moving, NOW" She yelled as she turned them to the direction of where they first approached the community, the forest. Louis could feel his mind slipping away, as if it were shutting down as he hastily made way to the forest. His breathing shakily grew each second passing as his mind grew more blank.

Eventually, the four of them began to run. New footsteps followed closely behind Skyler, when Louis looked, his heart sunk and brown eyes widened as he saw the others from the so called mission come back. Mitch was fuming as he ran, (Y/n) not to far behind them as they ran, a trickle of blood running down her forehead and a slight limp to her figure as she pushed on. And lastly was Gavin with a shirt soaked in a thick layer of blood along with his hands, only, it didn't seem to be his own blood as he carried someone in his arms.

It was Aasim.

Limp and nonmoving, practically showing no signs of life. The thought alone caused Louis' stomach to churn uncomfortably as he shook his head, his mind blinded by the instinct to run.

------------------------------

Simple, short minutes felt like long, dreading hours to the group as their legs burned with each forceful step they took along with their uneven breathing as they push past their limits. The sudden adrenaline rush finally came to an end once a sudden, strangled cry was heard, snapping the group out of their running spree. Turning to see what had happened, Louis could see (Y/n) sprawled out on the ground, wheezing. Taking a step towards her, only to hunch forward, hands on his shaky knees as he coughed harshly, gulping down fresh breaths once done the coughing. Many of the others following suit as they tried to collect their own breaths, some sitting down of the forest ground while others using nearby trees as support.

The first of them to gain enough of their breath was Skylar, taking in a sharp, long inhale as he straightened his back. Running his agitated hands through his long, blond hair as he cursed to himself.
"What the fuck was that?!" He growled. Everyone else, aside from short gasps of longing breath, were silent as they watched the older of them grow to be more angered. In response, Gavin coughed before straining to regain his stance as he held an injured Aasim to his chest. "The hell am I supposed to know? I certainly didn't ask for this."
Skylar's fists clenched as he continued to have his petty staredown with Gavin, the thick silence broken when the cracked voice of Nora spoke up.

"Where's Ezekiel and Talia?"

As fast as the tension was broken, had it resurfaced as the males' from the other groups faces fell with distraught and gloom, along with a soft, strangled cry from (Y/n). The message was clear within an instant by their facial reactions. Shock resigned amongst the others, in which the news were still fresh.

"What the fu-"

"We don't have time for this. Aasim's hurt and currently is barely holding on, we need to get going, find a place to set up camp and patch his wound until we get back to the school."

Gavin spoke up again, shifting his arms as he began to walk forward. The others solemnly nod as the take a couple more seconds to collect themselves before following suit. Louis hung back as he now took this chance to rush over to (Y/n), kneeling next to the female who now was sitting on her knees. Seconds ago she wheezed dry sobs, and now, only held up a blank stare as she watched the others rush off. Blinking hastily once a firm, yet gentle hand was placed on her shoulder as she glanced over to Louis. It was evident to them both as their eyes glossed over with sadness for the sudden loss.

"We need to catch up to them." The male of the two stated softly as he stood from his kneel, the female nodding in understanding as he stood up herself. Unfortunately not making it a couple of steps before wincing in pain as she stumbled forward, only to have Louis quickly throw his arms out under her, catching her fall. "Whoa, you okay there?" He asked, concern thick in his voice as he slowly helped the female stand up. (Y/n) inhaled sharply as she glanced down to her ankle. "I...I fell a while back...I think it's sprained..." She stated in her soft voice, which Louis acknowledges as he gently wraps an arm around her waist. The sudden contact surprising the female as she snapped her gaze up to Louis's face, which was close to hers due to the little distance between one another.

"Lean against me, it'll be quicker for us to catch up to the group and to not have so much pressure on it." He said as he started taking slow steps, guiding her to follow his pace. The two eventually found a balanced routine of steps to follow as they started to walk faster with a slight hobble. Only moments had passed before they had finally caught up to the rest of the quick moving group.

The young teens hung back of the group as the fell into a semi-comfortable stride, enough to hold them at the same speed at the group without creating to much of a distance in between them. Both silent as thoughts and memories raced through their minds, overflowing as if a tidal wave had swept them away into the sea. All they had as of this moment was the comforting presence and hold of one another, even if it intended to keep up with the rest of the members of the group as they make way of their journey back to the school.

The sunny day of which started of with hope turned into a day of mourning.
