"Thank you for everything, Glenda." I wrapped my arms around Glenda's plump frame. She sighs into my hair as she hugs me back, while Levi stands awkwardly at the bottom of the stairs.
He woke me up in a rush thirty minutes ago rambling about Hanje sending him a message and saying we had to leave immediately. He'd barely spared me a glance since then, though, and only nodded to Glenda as he exited the house.
"Stay safe." Glenda whispers. She pulls away from the embrace and smooths the apron on her dress down. "Now, get going. It looks like the Captain is about ready to fall asleep."
Looking at the bottom of the porch steps I see Levi leaned against the railing with his eyes closed, the reigns of the two horses we're taking back hang loosely from his hands and threaten to fall out. I nod at Glenda and walk down the steps and pat his shoulder, taking one set of the reigns from him. He jumps, his cat like eyes opening immediately.
"Let's head out." I nod at him. Levi doesn't say anything, just goes to mount his horse. I follow suit and hoist my body onto the unfamiliar animal. My own horse is back at the castle, and at this point she may have even escaped.
"Lux." Glenda's voice stops me and Levi from taking off, and I look up to see her smiling at me. "Perry is proud of you, he always will be."
My heart skips, I can feel it threatening to drop out of my chest. Would he be? Would he want to see me in this position of leadership, trying to carry on his legacy?
"Oi," Levi clears his throat. "We have to go now. Erwin said it was urgent, Elton."
Pushing my feelings back down I nod to him, and then Glenda. When Levi strikes the reigns of his horse and I follow suit I can't help the uneasy feeling pooling in the pit of my stomach.
Glenda lives a normal life now. She isn't known for helping military spies or soldiers. Her husband is dead and she lives alone with her calico cat. So what happens if someone comes snooping around?
I keep quiet until we reach the gate and the Garrison let's us out, then I speed up some to get next to Levi. He glances at me from the corner of his eye then resumes concentrating on the horizon line.
"Levi." I raise my voice over the winds.
"What?"
"I have a bad feeling about leaving Glenda behind."
His eyes flicker to me again. "What were we supposed to do? Invite her back just because you have a bad feeling? I know I say to trust your instinct, but we don't have time for this."
I shake my head and look forward. "I'm not suggesting we turn around, but once everything is settled with Erwin I'm coming back to check on her. Something doesn't feel right."
"You're a soldier Lux. Whatever you're feeling you need to ignore it and carry on with your duties like normal."
