A/N: Trigger warnings: descriptions of death, blood, major cliff hanger, etc. will not make very much sense, but it's written that way on purpose.
Shiganshina District, midday
Obtuse pieces of boulder speed towards us and I flinch as one of them hits the wall next to my head. Any closer to my right it would have smashed into the back of Erwin's head. He stares down at me with a hardened glare, one that has taken years to perfect I assume.
"I'm not sure what you want me to do, Erwin. What's done is done."
His icy blue eyes shoot daggers into me and his glare burns even angrier than before. "I want you to do the right thing. When you made the choice to join the Scouting Legion you gave up your chance at freedom."
I scoff at his incredulous words. "My reasons for joining the Scouting Legion had nothing to do with the fate of humanity, Erwin. You and I both know that."
"So your own selfish desires suddenly outweigh the fate of mankind? Be honest with yourself for one second, Lux-"
"No, Erwin! You should be honest with yourself!" He leans back at my outburst, a little shocked to see me pushback. I huff angrily and stand up taller. "Do you honestly believe that this madness, this chaos, will save everyone within the walls? Or are you like everyone else who's stayed alive up to this point for their own selfish desires?" I throw his words back in his face and see the way his eyebrows twitch with annoyance.
"It was a complete violation of my privacy to go into my quarters without permission, even if you had reasonable suspicion. It's shameful that a valiant commander such as yourself would break someone's trust like that. Especially someone whose trust you deemed of utmost importance four months ago!
"My selfish desires had nothing to do with my decision. I'm a soldier. All I have known since I was seventeen is the bloodshed and hellfire of war! You think I chose to continue living this way because of a man?"
Erwin clenches his jaw and his eyes flicker to the side. Unable to meet my eye, he lets his shoulders drop as he exhales a breath. "Your privacy wasn't one of my concerns. A commander is there to guide and protect the lives of their soldiers," he finally meets my eye again, "you should know that."
Another piece of rock hits the crumbling wall behind me, this one even closer than the last.
"A moment ago you asked me what I want you to do. I want you to fix it. I want for you to disappear, Lux Elton."
Outskirts of Shiganshina District, dawn, seven hours earlier
It had been a long night of traveling, both on horseback and foot. Wearily I lift my face from the ground to watch the sky turn from the inky blue of the night to the light pink of the morning. The golden sun was making its way above the green hills off in the horizon. My eyes are dry from the lack of sleep but I still watch the sky above turn into brilliant shades of orange and red while the sun inches higher above, slowly, but surely.
A feeling of uneasiness creeps into my stomach and begins to claw away at my insides. It latches on viciously, tearing into my insides and cutting me deeper, deeper, deeper. In front of me, Erwin is leading the Scouts to the inner wall of Shiganshina, where hopefully Eren can plug up the hole allowing us to be one step closer in reclaiming Wall Maria.
Inside of my jacket there's a secret weapon I've been holding onto just in case. If the moment should arise, just like Levi has been charged with using the serum, I have put the responsibility upon myself to use it only in the most dire of situations. Regardless of who needs it the most, a low ranking cadet or even Erwin, I'll use it to the best of my ability. Of course, this is my dirty little secret.
