Once all the Avengers were in the house, we all split to rest and recuperate. Barton handed me off to his heavily pregnant wife, Laura. She took me upstairs to their bedroom and pulled out a box labelled, Old Clothes. Laura then places the box on the bed while urging me to sit down. We both started sorting through the assortment of clothes as chatted back and forth.
"Thank you so much for lending me your clothes," I tell Laura.
"It's no problem. Luckily, we have the same size. Plus I'm sure you don't want to stay in your uniform forever." Laura jokes.
"That is true," I admit while chuckling. Laura suddenly stops shuffling around the box and looks at me. I look up from the clothes to see a worried look on her face.
"You look like you have the weight if the world on your shoulders. What happened to you?" Laura asks. I tense at her question, the memories I had left in my head resurfacing into my train of thought.
"I'm sorry, I'm being too nosy." Laura corrects herself, returning her attention to her old clothes.
"No," I say quickly, causing her to look at me once again. "Long story short, I used to work for a horrible organization."
"HYDRA?" she asks and I nod.
"They trained me and tortured me, taking away my memories in the process. I'm lucky that I'm alive. I remind myself that every day." I explain, my last words turning into a small whisper, my head tipped towards the floor. Suddenly, I feel the bed shift beside me and Laura's arms embrace me the best they can with her stomach in the way. I tense at the gesture but Laura reassures me:
"It's okay. I promise that I won't hurt you as they did. You're safe."
After she repeated that sentence a few times, I relax in her arms. We stay like this until I hear the door to the bedroom open. I jump off the bed and pull my hands in front of me in defence. Clint walks into the room with his hands up in surrender, resulting in me dropping mine.
"Sorry. Reflex." I say.
"It's okay. Is everything okay in here? You guys are taking a little while." Clint asks.
"Everything's fine. We're just talking." Laura reassures before getting up and pushing Clint out of the room. She turns around from the closed door and shakes her head.
"Boys," she whispers under her breath, making me chuckle. Laura waddles over to the box and pulls out a white crop top, with some high waist jeans. Once she lays it on the bed, Laura disappears into the walk-in closet attached to the room. I take one last glance into the box when a shiny object catches my eye. I float it out of the box and a beautiful necklace appears in the air. Two chains hang down, the shorter of the two holding a small circle.
"I guess that's one of your powers." I hear Laura say from behind me, causing me to drop the necklace in fear. I turn around quickly to see a bright smile on her face, a small flannel in her arms.
"Sorry if I scared you." I apologize.
"Don't worry about it. It takes a lot to scare me." Laura comments. I go to drop the necklace back into the box, but Laura stops me.
"Keep it," she says.
"Why?" I ask.
"As a reminder that your powers are not something that people are afraid of. Instead, they are something people marvel at," she replies. Laura then drops the flannel beside the outfit.
