Toya found himself spending more and more time with Amaryllis. They would have little conversations about school and such and do harmless things together. Toya enjoyed spending time with her and as did Amaryllis, or at least Toya thought so seeing how she hasn't turned him away yet.
They were supposed to be meeting today but Toya was running a little behind. As he trotted along the pavement, Toya couldn't help but wonder if Amaryllis was going to have any stories to tell him. She often had tales from her internship and her hero class. Not only were they entertaining stories but Amaryllis would get excited to share them and Toya couldn't help but enjoy seeing her smile like that.
As he rounded the corner he could see Amaryllis's silver head a little ways down. She looked to have her head down, preoccupied with something else.
An idea sparked in Toya's head. He made his way closer to her and made sure to step as lightly as possible. Even when he was right behind her she didn't seem to notice. He gently tapped her shoulders, or at least he thought he did, for Amaryllis whipped around with a startled look. There was a flash of fear that ran across her face before disappearing. She took a few breaths before she finally relaxed.
"Are you alright?" Toya asked, he found himself worried that he had startled her a bit to much. She had just looked to, scared.
There was a good moment before Amaryllis answered. Her red eyes seemed to gaze right through Toya.
"What happened to you?" She asked. Amaryllis seems to be an expert at changing the subject.
It took Toya a moment to answer. His mind then clicked and he reached up and ran his fingers along the bandage that covered his cheek. "Oh, this," Toya said. "It's nothing." Red eyes gazed up at him with an unsure glare. She looked to be studying his face before she turned away.
"Despite the fact that you were late," there was an irritated tone in her voice, "what was it you wanted to do again?" It took Toya a moment to recall what he had planned. "I found another interesting place," he said. "It's kind of like one you found, with the creek and such." There was an excitement resigning in his voice. Toya gazed down to see if he could notice a change on Amaryllis's face. There was a glint in her red eyes.
Amaryllis followed closely behind Toya like a lost puppy. It wasn't terribly far and they soon found themselves at a fence that fell down on the opposite side with a creek residing at the bottom. Toya found himself gazing over his shoulder before he hopped over the fence. Amaryllis had a look of deep thought. When she noticed him staring she snapped out of thought and gazed up.
"What?"
"Nothing." Toya was quick to reply.
Amaryllis hopped over the short fence and slid down the slop following Toya. The bottom was only about 7 or 9 feet down and gave way to a grassy area down below. It was small and cozy with some underbrush growing and short but full trees, it made just enough to cover parts of the area from people that might be walking by. However, the highlight had to be the wildflowers that grew scattered around the place.
Toya had stumbled upon this place when he was just looking for some peace and quite, and the fact that he was looking for a spot to do his "bad habit", so to call it, and he happened to find this place.
Amaryllis was crouching next to a patch of purple wildflowers. Her red eyes were transfixed on the flowers as she gently ran her fingers throughout the bunch.
"I was always told that I was named Amaryllis because my dad would always give my mom a red amaryllis every time they went out, he said that they matched her eyes as they also do mine." From the tone of her voice she seemed to just be thinking aloud, but there was a heavy mood to her voice as she spoke. It was as if she was speaking of a distance memory.
"That sounds very," Toya thought through his next words, he was really just trying to make conversation. "Thoughtful." Amaryllis chuckled, "It is," she said, her voice fading. She leaned back and sat down in front of the flowers. "Even though I would personally hate being given the flowers I'm named after." There was a amusing tone in her words. Toya chuckled.
There was a moment of silence before anything was said. Toya found himself just staring down at her. For someone who intended on becoming a hero she had fragile features.
"Your father," Amaryllis said, she arched her head back to stare up at Toya. "It's Endeavor, it's it?" Another moment passed between them, and Toya just stared into her glistening red eyes. He was sure that his face was reflecting a look of disgust.
"Yeah," Toya mumbled, he did his best to push painful memories out of his head.
Amaryllis removed her gaze from his, she turned her attention back to the flowers. "You look a lot like him." That was the last thing Toya wanted to hear. "But," was quickly added, "even if you share is eyes and hair, and even facial features, you have a softness in her face and eyes." She took a second, "you're a lot more approachable than he is." She said this like it was to be a mood lightener.
"When it came time for internships, I was given an offer from Endeavor, and who in there right mind would turn down and internship from the number 2 hero?" Toya watched her delicate hands pluck one of the flowers. She twirled it around in her hand, she stood up and faced Toya. They were only a few inches apart.
"I wasn't aware of what I was getting myself into," her red eyes watched the flower spin around and around in her fingers. "He has threatening eyes and harsh words." Amaryllis stopped spinning the flower and met Toya blue eyes. "But you're different," Amaryllis reached up and placed the flower behind one of Toya's ears. "You have kind eyes and a gentle like tone." And they just stood there, gazing into each other's eyes.
"Is that why you looked so scared before?" Toya asked. Amaryllis's eyes glossed over with an ashamed look as she dropped. "Yes," she said, "and I feel like I must apologize for it. I assume that is the last person you want to be associated with."
"It's fine." Toya mumbled, "and you made up for it." A smile screeched across Amaryllis's lips at his words. It soon faded into more a of a sly smile.
"I might have to change the gentle tone part." Her tone suggested that she was trying to lighten the mood. "You are rather snarky at times."
"Oh really?" Toya replied with a smile and a mocking tone. He gazed into her red eyes that reflected nothing but warmth. With her, Toya couldn't help but feel at ease.
