////Chapter 10////
"Was it hard?"
"What?"
"Coming here." Chaeyoung finished, taking another sip from the coffee Mina had just brewed. The foreigner sighed, shrugging at the question. "It must've been hard."
Mina hummed, "I guess. I was leaving everything behind in Japan, it was painful but now that I'm here, I guess the sacrifice was worth it." She confessed, surprised that Chaeyoung was taking this quite serious.
"Well, makes sense." The tiger chuckled, "If you want to do something happy, you gotta make some sacrifices." The wise words left her mouth and Mina was pretty amazed by how sympathetic Chaeyoung could be.
To tease the cub a bit, Mina spoke up, "Wow, I wasn't expecting such wise words coming out of your mouth." She laughed, taking a sip from her own glass.
Chaeyoung scoffed, rolling her eyes, "Oh c'mon. I can be wise."
"Yeah right."
As the conversation ended, silence had fallen on the two of them. It didn't feel awkward, surprisingly, but Mina wanted to talk more. The deafening noise of silence irked her as she hated how quiet it was. Chaeyoung sighed, taking the last sip from her cup.
"Hey, since it's the weekend-" Chaeyoung crossed her arms, "-Why don't we go hang out at the new café? I heard the food there is good." The tiger smiled, looking up at Mina with hope though the latter didn't seem to notice.
"I can't." Mina sighed, already sensing what Chaeyoung will do next, "I have homework."
The tiger grunted, rolling her eyes playfully, "You can do that later. It's nearby, it doesn't hurt to visit it right?" Chaeyoung did have a point, Mina thought. The penguin didn't have any motivation to do work so clearing her head would be her best bet, but with Chaeyoung?
"I need to finish my homework." Mina grunted, grabbing the two empty cups. Chaeyoung huffed, crossing her arms with a pout on her lips.
"You're boring."
Mina rolled her eyes, "Thanks."
"I guess I have to say here." Chaeyoung smiled.
Mina was about to let the words slide, until she let the sentence register into her thoughts, "What? No, you aren't staying here."
"Don't make me beg." Chaeyoung snickered, remembering how embarassed Mina was she went down on one knee. The latter clenched the cup in her hand, her ears going a little red.
"Just be quiet, ok?"
"Yay!"
~
Thankfully, Chaeyoung did stay quiet. All she needed was the password to the WiFi and she didn't bother Mina at all. The only time Chaeyoung spoke was probably when she asked for a cup of water and that's pretty much it.
She's much quieter than I thought. Mina hummed, the tip of her pen tapping the corner of her lip. Chaeyoung stayed in the living room of the condo while Mina did her work in her own bedroom. The two didn't even speak to each other.
"Should I go check on her?" Mina questioned, concerned that the tiger was being quiet. "What if she's dead and I don't even know it." She laughed at her own assumption.
Mina finished writing the last sentence to her question before gently putting the pen down. She stood up from her chair, left her room and proceeded to walk to the living room. It was all silence and the lights were off to. Last time she checked, they were all brightly lit.
She peeked over the wall, her eyes looking for a figure. Mina stopped midway as she sees Chaeyoung's body resting on the couch, her phone in her hands, a couple of pillows on the floor and an open mouth with dripping saliva. How disgusting. Mina thought.
Mina grabbed the empty glass of water, walking quietly towards the kitchen. Chaeyoung groaned and the foreigner thought it was due to her but it was clearly not. The young student was just dreaming. Mina sighed, placing the cup into the sink, steadily.
In a few minutes time, Mina found herself leaning on the wall, staring at the sleeping photographer. She didn't know why, but it was entertaining. Chaeyoung moved a couple of times, her phone finally slipping out of her hands, making a loud thud. Surprisingly, it wasn't enough to wake up Chaeyoung.
Though, Mina did make a mental note to clean the pillow sheet resting under Chaeyoung's head. She quietly approached the tiger, her hand ready to shake the young kid awake. Once she pressed her palm against Chaeyoung's shoulder the younger one sprung forward.
Mina jumped back, almost tripping over herself, "Holy cra-you scared me Chaeyoung!"
The latter looked at Mina, her eyes filled with fear and her forehead dripping with sweat. The way Chaeyoung breathed was heavy and she looked like she was in a state of panic. Mina noticed this and looked at the younger student, "Chaeyoung?"
"S-Sorry." Chaeyoung muttered, pulling her knees closer, her fingers massaging her temples. Mina's eyes landed on the formers hand, her fingers shaking.
"D-" Mina sat in front of Chaeyoung, "-Did you get a nightmare?"
The latter didn't even bother lying, "Yeah." She spoke, her voice was raspy due to the lack of use. Chaeyoung took a deep breath, her hand clearing away her sweat.
"What was it about?" Mina questioned, using this gentle voice so Chaeyoung would feel comfortable, which was working.
"I'd rather not say." The latter mumbled, her lips quivering. Mina, for the first time, actually felt guilty that she couldn't do anything to really comfort the young girl. She doesn't know much about Chaeyoung but in this situation she really wished she did, so she knew what to say.
"Do you need water?" Mina was about to stand up but a hand caught her wrist. Chaeyoung shook her head, her eyes avoiding Mina's but it wasn't because of embarrassment.
"Just stay here." Chaeyoung whispered. No tears were visible and it seemed as if her anxious state went down a little but her hands are still shaking. Mina couldn't help but let a bit of heat crawl up her cheeks when she heard that, but she didn't protest.
Mina stat back down, unconsciously bringing herself closer to the photographer. Chaeyoung sighed, her eyes were half open probably because she just woke up from, what seemed like, a deep sleep. "It may sound childish, but nightmares are one of the things I hate. I usually had someone to be there to comfort me, but they're not here at the moment." Chaeyoung muttered.
Out of the blue, Chaeyoung felt two gentle arms wrap around her body, pulling her close. Her head rested on Mina's shoulder, her eyes unwilling to look up and meet eye contact with the penguin. "Mi-"
Mina knew what she was doing was different, she knew that after this she'll feel awkward but she chose to do whatever at the moment. Whatever can comfort Chaeyoung, she'll do it. Right now that tiger, was her priority. And it sounded weird to her just thinking about it, "Just stay still and sleep-" Mina whispered.
"-I'll be here when you wake up. I'm not going anywhere, Chaeyoung."
