"Please...I'm not understanding, how can any of this be real?" Asks my mother.
"It's ok Jody. This is a lot to take in and your handling it well." Says Harper.
"Let me try." Interrupts Alex. "Let's start over, I'll try and simplify it as much as I can."
"That would be wonderful, thank you." She says as she turns to face Harper. "I just have one question first."
Harper glances at Alex who subtlety nods in approval. Harper then turns back to my mother. "Go ahead Jody, ask your question."
Sitting on the sofa with my mom I feel her squeeze my hand as she begins asking her question. "I've known you a long time Harper, your a good man. So no offense to you Alex but I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that your in charge here. Harper runs a successful home inspection business while you look like a hellion from my sons high school. You can't be any older than my son, so how is it you know better than a man with more life experience than yourself?" She asks.
"This is complicated Jody. I assure you that Alex has far more life experience than I, you speak of good men, let me assure you that Alex is a GREAT man. Let him explain, he'll be able to do it far better than myself, just give him a chance." Says Harper.
My mother purses her lips in disagreement but out of respect for Harper she stops talking.
Alex smiles and I'm not sure why, maybe he finds my mom amusing. Regardless of why he stands up and comes over to the sofa my mother and I are sitting on. "May I sit?" He asks. My mom nods and he sits next her, close enough to be personal but not so close to be uncomfortable.
"Ok Jody, the first thing you need to understand is that supernatural creatures are real, I know that must sound ridiculous but it's the truth." Says Alex. I watch as my moms eyes widen with disbelief but she remains silent allowing Alex to continue. "When the world was young it belonged to the fae, humans are In fact distant descendants of the fae. The vampires, werewolves and witches all came much later. Now as human civilization started to thrive the fae began to dwindle, you see the fae cannot handle our cities or our way of life.
I see confusion come over her, my mom is struggling with this. "Supernatural creatures are real? That's impossible, how could something like that remain secret? She asks. "And why can't fae handle our cities?"
"Iron?" I ask before anyone is able to respond.
"That's right Taven. Iron is lethal to fae, their bodies just can't handle it, you could say it's their kryptonite. As for remaining secret...it hasn't. Our existence is known, that's why Hollywood is flooded with supernatural productions. However its mostly of the witches, vampires and werewolves, we are what the general public recognize, we are identifiable. The fae are not as recognizable and that is precisely how they intend to keep it." Says Alex.
"What does this have to do with my son?" Asks Jody.
"As our civilization grew and we began mining the iron the fae had to retreat to safer surroundings. You see over countless generations the fae DNA with in our genome has been bred out, unfortunately every couple generations a child is born with active fae DNA, these children are called the Kindred. The fae feel that these children threaten their very existence and it is mandated by the greater fae council that all Kindred must be killed."
My mother gasps and I use the distraction to ask a question. "But how can they know about me?" I ask. "This just happened and only Harper was present."
"The fae are a highly magical and powerful people Taven. Their magic is in sync with one another and the natural environments of the world itself. When a Kindred becomes active it's like a beacon signaling them of your constant whereabouts, you cannot run or hide from them." Replies Alex.
