Chapter 39
Alex's POV
"My mom won't stop calling me." I said to Michael. I was still at his house.
"Maybe you should go home." Michael said, which confused me.
"Wait, first you tell me I don't have to go there and now you think I should?"
"That's because I wanted you to stay with me." he said in a soft voice. "But you haven't been home in a few days, you should go there just to let her know you're okay. She's probably worried about you."
"Fine, but I'm not going there for her, it's for Henry."
I got up off the couch and walked over to the door. Michael followed me and grabbed my hand turning me around. "I have one last thing to ask you before you leave." he said. "Are you still mad at me?"
I waited a little bit to answer. I wish I was, because he deserved it, but the feeling just wasn't there anymore. "No."
"Good." he said, he pecked my lips. "I love you." I knew he felt like reminding me a lot because of what happened last night. I swear he said it like ten times before we went to bed.
"I love you too," I said in an exhausted tone. All the stuff going on lately was just wearing me out.
I walked out of his house, as Michael mumbled a 'bye' and shut the door behind me.
I walked on the road, heading in the direction of my house. I really wasn't looking forward to showing up. I felt like my mom was going to ground me for life and never let me leave again, because I left when she told me not to and then I didn't come back for three days.
I finally reached my house, I felt like turning back, but I knew I had no choice. I put my hand on the doorknob, and opened up the door. I walked into the house to see a suitcase by the doorway of the kitchen.
This couldn't be good.
I looked around the living room and through the kitchen and in the laundry room, but I couldn't find anybody. I decided to check up stairs next. Once I reached the top of the stairs I could hear soft voices coming from my parents room.
The door was closed, except for a small crack. I stood by the door as I listened to them talk.
"Think about Alex and Henry." my mother said.
"Did you think of them when you decided to sleep with that man?!" my dad said. My mouth dropped as I listened to their conversation. My mom actually told my dad? Or did he figure it out somehow.
"Of course I did."
"Then how could you do it?! If you knew you were tearing your family apart?" my dad said, his tone was sharp and angry. "Our daughter won't even come home because of you!"
"Dad." I said, pushing the door open. Both their eyes landed on me, as I walked in. There was another suitcase on the bed, my dad was standing between it and his dresser, putting his clothes in it.
"Alex, thank god you're home!" my mom said, coming towards me and wrapping her arms around me. I felt like pushing them off, but I let her have her moment.
"Can I talk to dad?" I asked politely, even though I felt like yelling at her like my father was.
"Of course," she said with a weak nod. She left the room, shutting the door all the way this time.
"Are you leaving?" were the first words to come out of my mouth.
My dad let out a heavy sigh and nodded his head. I didn't expect him to stay, but I didn't want him to leave. If my mother was the one to leave it would just be Henry and I at home while dad was always at work. "You can't expect me to stay Alex."
"I know," I said softly. "That doesn't mean I don't want you to stay."
"I'm barely home anyways." he said, letting out another sigh. He put down the shirt he had in his hand and turned towards me. "Look, I'm sorry that I'm never here. I don't spend time with you or Henry and you two are my children. I'm so sorry that you never see your dad, and if I was home more than maybe this would have never happened."
"It wasn't your fault. You can't blame mom cheating on yourself." I said, I felt really bad. My dad thought it was his own fault that this happened. It doesn't matter why my mother did it, it is not my dad's fault. She made her own choices.
"She said she felt so alone. I didn't mean to make her feel that way. I love her. I love you, and Henry." he explained.
"I know dad, I love you too." I said. "But it was her own choice to cheat. Don't blame yourself."
He shook his head, I'm sure so many things were going through his head. "I don't feel as if I can stay here." he admitted. "I would take you kids with me, but we both know how much I work."
I just nodded. I didn't know what to say, and I felt like I could burst into tears at any moment.
"Just don't become one of those dads who never comes around. Be a better dad than the one mom broke her faithful promise with."
"Wait, you know the guy?" he asked, confused. I guess mom didn't tell him everything. Maybe she didn't even tell him I caught her.
"You know Michael?" my dad nodded. "His best friend Payton is his daughter. She barely ever sees him. She wants nothing to do with him. Don't do that to us."
"I won't, I promise." he said, walking over to me and giving me a hug. That felt like the right time to cry.
* * *
I sat next to Michael on the couch. Luke was sitting on one of the speakers, scrolling through his phone. I could see Michael glaring at him, and then looking away. I knew he wanted to forgive him because Payton asked him to. I mean I wanted it too, we don't need fist fights every time we're all together. There's enough drama in our group of friends. We all have our own little dramas in our own lives too.
We were waiting for Calum and Ashton to show up. They were running late because Ashton took too long saying goodbye to Kim. I thought that was adorable, and I was happy for him. Michael grabbed my hand and slipped his fingers between mine. He gave me a small smile when I looked at him.
Soon enough Calum and Ash showed up, and Payton was the only one missing.
"Where's Payton?" Luke asked.
"Right here," she said, walking through the door.
"Right on que," Michael said with a small chuckle. She gave him a smile.
"I have some news," Payton said, "they do these recovery parties at the treatment center. Like a going away party. My mom is having one because she's finally recovered. They need live music, so guess who I signed up?"
"Chris Brown?" Calum joked, causing himself and Ash to laugh.
"She's talking about us." Luke said, with a small smile.
"There's a lot of people at the treatment center that will see you guys play." Payton said, "And my mom loves you guys."
"I'm in," Michael said with a smile. "When do we leave?"
