I woke up to the smell of pancakes; mom must be feeling guilty about something. I drag myself to the kitchen to see what was up.

“Morning, honey” she greeted me cheerfully, way too perky for this early in the morning. I glanced at the clock, whoops, maybe for me anyway.

“Glad to see your alive”, she chuckled; I hate it when she laughs at her own jokes.

“Mom, it’s only half past ten, it’s not that late” I groaned

“Oh, all right. I’m sorry for getting home so late last night; you were fine here by yourself?”

“Yeah mom, I was fine. I’m going to hang out by the pool, okay?”

“Oh, okay then” she said dejectedly

Really, why does she bother? Apparently being a parent is something you can turn on and off whenever it suits her.

I got changed, grabbed my book and headed out to the pool.

One thing about my father, he has a thing for music, like me I guess, this means that our whole house is pretty much rigged for sound. It’s great! I turn the system on and there’s my iPhone blasting out the speakers!

I set myself up on one of the loungers, hat, sunglasses, book and some of my mom’s homemade iced tea. It really can’t get much better than this. I spend the next three hours swimming when I get too hot and reading to dry off.

“Honey” my mom called from inside the house.

Oh no, this can’t be good.

“Rosie, honey, your dad is holding a dinner party and he wants you to be there tonight, go and start getting ready please.”

Ah shit, I hate these things. I always sit there and have to make painful small talk and spend the whole night trying not to look bored.

Might as well go get ready now, otherwise I’ll have to leave with my hair half done or something along those lines

I grabbed all my things and headed to the bathroom to have a shower.

I grabbed a blue one shoulder dress out of the 'mom approved' section of my wardrobe and picked my iPhone up off of my bed and took everything into the bathroom. I plugged my iPhone into the speakers and jumped into the shower.

I was halfway through straightening my hair when someone makes a beat on the bathroom door.

"Entrée, mon frère" I laughed

“What’s mom dragging you to now?” Zane asked in a bored tone

“Another one of Dad’s business things” I groaned, these things suck.

“Well your lucky I’m around to look after you” He said with a smirk. Uh oh, he’s up to something.

“I’m your date for tonight and as your date I think it is only fair for me to organize you a surprise for this evening, once we get through dad’s thing anyway”

“Is that right? Well at least I know to expect whatever you’re planning to come after the dinner.” I smiled knowingly at him, reminding him of the last dinner he accompanied me to. He blushed and looked sheepishly at the floor.

“I thought you said you were going to forget that!” he said indignantly, that paired with the threatening look in his eyes made me crack. I just started laughing, not the sane type of laugh, but the side splitting, eye watering type of laugh that makes people wonder if you’re sane.

Which by the way Zane was looking at me, I’m guessing that was exactly what he was thinking.

HA “Sorry, Big Bro, but that was just too funny to forget” I grinned at him, and his face softened. After seeing me sad for such a long time he must now just appreciate whenever I truly smile, for months, it was forced. Even then it didn’t convince him.
