Christmas 2016.
I was standing near the window, watching the snow fall, while everyone around me was either eating, drinking, or singing along to the Christmas carols that were being sung by my older brother.
Christmastime is supposed to be one of those magical moments that you see in movies, where the families gather around the tree, opening presents, and having a huge Christmas dinner later on in the day. Unfortunately, that's not how Christmas went in the Langston household.
Christmas in our house was always the social event of the season, and everyone literally broke their necks and their bank accounts to be apart of this joyous event. Aside from our closest family and friends, people that my parents were involved with, business wise, would also come be apart of our special holiday moments as well.
"Where's my baby sis at?" I heard my older brother, Devin, ask.
"Which one?" My youngest sister, Demi, questioned. It was a total of six Langston children, Demi being the youngest, and Desiree being the oldest. In between, was my twin brothers Devin and Devon, then it was me...the middle child, then Demetrius and Demi...the second set of twins and the babies of the family.
"The only sister that can actually sing!" I rolled my eyes, knowing that he was talking about me, but I was in no mood to sing.
"She's over here hiding!" Demetrius called out, wrapping his arm around me, and dragging me away from the window.
"I'm not hiding, but I also don't want to sing." I whined, taking a seat next to Devin.
"Come on, Mrs. Grinch. It's a Christmas tradition, so cheer up and let's sing this song." He chuckled, playfully nudging me. I smiled a little, sighing heavily, as I scanned the crowd to see where my parents and boyfriend were. As always, my parents were entertaining their friends, while Deron was nowhere in sight.
"Hey Demi, can you go look for Deron? He's been looking forward to this moment all week." I smiled as I thought about how much Deron has raved about me singing, so I definitely didn't want him missing it.
"Last I heard, he was headed upstairs." Devon voiced, grubbing on a huge plate of food. His ass always somewhere eating.
"Let me go get him and then we can sing." I said, getting up and easing through the crowd.
"Destiny! Where you going?" My older sister, Desiree, asked as she appeared by my side.
"Going upstairs to look for Deron. We're about to sing and I don't want him to miss it."
"Girl, he had some of Aunt Nia's macaroni salad, so he's gonna be up there for awhile. But no worries... I'll record the entire performance and you can show him later." Deron should've known NOT to eat Aunt Nia's macaroni salad, knowing she can't cook worth shit. I sighed and nodded my head, as we went join the rest of our siblings near the piano.
"What song should we sing?" He asked me.
"Mind if I make a suggestion?" My mom chimed in, as she and my dad stood front and center. "You know how much I love it when you sing 'All I want for Christmas is you,' so Devin...hit it!" The music started, which pretty much told me that I had to sing the song that she picked out for me. I didn't mind though, only because I loved this song, so of course I was going to sing my heart out:
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
And I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
