"Alright, that's all of them," Prometheus said as the last vampire on the outside of the manor fell. "It's clear for our boys to escape. You sure you don't want to pick up a machete and take out a few of the stray bloodsuckers?"

"I'm not allowed to interfere," Cole told him. "As a reaper, all I'm allowed to do is watch and wait for something with a soul to die."

"Vampires don't have souls?" Prometheus asked.

"At first, they do," Cole said. "But after a while, the person they were as a human just... fades away. Not even this vampire cure that hunters now have could save them once their soul is gone."

"Wait, so even if saving Ben's mom were an option..."

"She'd no longer have a soul, regardless of whether she's vampire or human," Cole admitted. "Lisa Braeden died a long time ago. At some point she became a creature of pure evil. Ben can either accept that and let his mom stay here with her own kind, or... he can finish her himself."

"Please don't make me go in there," Hunter said with his voice shaking. He was clutching Rowena's hand tightly as they stood at the front door of the home Adam had promised would be a safe place where he'd have a family. "That's where my Daddy died. Uncle Ben and Jesse are going to kill me."

"Oh, Hunter," Rowena said as she touched his cheek. "You need to face your fears. Besides, as Adam's one and only son, this home if your birthright. It's yours now, wee one. To do with as you please. If you don't want them here, you can make them leave if you wish. Or if you want it, I can make them stay away."

"My own house?" Hunter whispered. "Could I move into my dad's room?"

"Of course you can, sweetie," Rowena smiled. "But the first order of business is to get the thing that can make you untouchable to the evil of the world. Let's make you a superhero by helping me get that demon tablet."

"I don't think this is a good idea," Luke said as he followed Sandy. "The Alpha Vampire kind of wants Ben to be alive. Do you know what he'll do to us if we do this?"

"He'll be upset for a little while, but then he'll turn us into real vampires," Sandy told him. "Especially when we tell him we had to do it. Ben escaped and had to be put down."

"I don't want to be a vampire," Luke said in a quiet tone. "I want to stay human."

"Excuse me?" Sandy asked as he turned around. "Why?"

"Because I like tasting things like cotton candy and drinking Baja Blast and listening to music, when we get turned, we give all of that up," Luke told him. "We only get a taste for blood and all of our senses will be overloaded so that we can't listen to good music, and I don't want to mate for life, I want to date around, find the right girl."

"We'll be eternal, Luke," Sandy told him. "And super strong, no one will ever kick us around again. We'll be the guys running the show. You and me, we'll be brothers forever."

"We can brothers forever now," Luke promised him. "But as humans who live real lives. We can leave here, Sandy. We can help our vampire brothers without killing anyone."

"No," Sandy said. "We need to do this. I need to do this. I love Josei."

"Then why didn't she speak up for you when she was offered Ben?" Luke asked as he walked past his brother.
