1997

Michael Colby sat with his back against the bedroom door as he listened to his parents argue for what would be the final time. The arguing had been something he'd had to listen to since he was born, being the son of two parents who decided to have a baby to save a marriage. It worked for a while, until things started getting bad again, at which point they decided to try the same trick again, resulting in baby Asher.

Michael listened to the yelling to get louder and louder before he heard a door slam and a car peel out of the driveway. That would be the last time Michael would ever hear from his father. After a few minutes, Michael finally stood up and headed to his baby brother's crib, where Asher was sleeping soundly.

"Don't worry, little brother," Michael told him. "I'll take care of you and teach you how to play baseball and how to toss worms at girls. You'll never need a Dad as long as you have me, I promise."

"I'm hungry," Asher said as he sat in the alley. "You said there'd be food here."

"This is a good restaurant," Mike's voice said from the dumpster. "They usually toss out some pretty good food, I just need a minute to-- AHA! Found a sandwich and it's nearly whole."

"When are we going to find a home?" Asher asked as Mike climbed out of the dumpster. It had been six months since they'd run away from the town where the demon Meg had murdered their mother and burned down the motel they lived in*. "I'm tired of living in old abandoned buildings."

"I know, kid, but this is the best we can do since I can't find a job that'll hire a 14-year-old," Mike said as he sat down and gave Asher half the sandwich. "Besides, the cops are probably looking for us. Someone back home would have reported us missing by now. And if we go home, we'll make all of our friends targets for that demon. We lost Mom, I don't want anyone else getting hurt because of us."

"We can always find Dad and--"

"NEVER say his name," Mike said sternly. "Dad doesn't give a shit about either of us. Why do you think you've never met him? Or had him show up for our birthday or just to see if we're doing okay. He walked out on us and never looked back."

Asher started crying as Mike put an arm around him. "I just want to have a home."

"I want that for you, too," Mike said. "You deserve better than this, kid. I swore I'd protect you and then I get you into this mess. I failed as a big brother."

"You saved my life," Asher told him. "i'd be dead if it weren't for you. You're the best big brother ever."

"I promise, someday we'll have a home," Mike told him. "And nice comfy beds and lots of food to eat. And then someday you'll meet a girl and you'll start your own family, and you won't need me anymore."

"I'll always need you," Asher told him. "We'll be best friends forever."

"Mike, stop!" Asher pleaded as he watched Mike beating a man to a bloody pulp on the floor of Asher's college dorm room. "You're killing him!"

Mike grabbed the guy and lifted him up to stare into his swollen eyes.

"You beat up my baby brother," Mike said in a cold, angry voice. "You put bruises on him and sent him to the emergency room. I ought to send you to the morgue. If I ever catch you even so much as being on the same campus as Asher from now on, they'll never find what's left of you. Trust me, I know people who can make you vanish without a trace. If I even hear your name whispered on the wind three states away, I'm coming for you, and there's no force in Heaven or Hell that can stop me."
