Chapter 25

Merome's POV

"Daddy! What about this one!" I asked, pointing to a nice blue bird cage. Biggums rested on my shoulder while I ran about.

"Slow down, Merome!" Daddy said with a laugh. I stopped and waited for him to follow me. He ran after me and just before he reached me, I ran to a different cage. I turned a corner and stopped.

There stood the perfect bat cage.

It was silver and in the circular cage was a swing. There was a door in the shape of a bat and an automatic dispenser that put food in the bowl when it was needed.

"Daddy." I whispered. "It's perfect." Two strong arms picked me up and twirled me around. I began laughing as Daddy spun around in the store. Biggums already liked the cage, I caught a glimpse of him sitting on it as Daddy twirled me around.

"We'll buy it today!" Daddy exclaimed in his best funny accent. I laughed as he put me down on the floor. Daddy gave the cashier the money and the cashier gave daddy a piece of paper. Daddy grabbed the cage.

"Let's go, Merome!" I smiled.

"Yay! Biggums has a home now!" Biggums landed on my shoulder and I pet the fur between his eyes and he seemed to like it. I giggled.

Daddy and I began walking back to the car. Daddy put the cage next to me as he buckled me in to my car seat. Biggums sat on my lap and I could swear he smiled at me. I began stroking the fur in Biggums back as Daddy and I drove home.

~time skip until they were home~

Daddy unbuckled me and I ran into the house to find Uncle Ty and Uncle Adam on the couch watching a guy point to a map and talk. I ran up and tackled Uncle Ty.

"Uncle Ty! Guess what!" I asked. Uncle Ty turned off the TV.

"What?!"

"Daddy and I went to the store to get Biggums a cage!" Uncle Ty smiled.

"Can I see Biggums?" Adam asked. I called and Biggums came.

"This is my bat, Biggums!" Biggums landed on Uncle Ty's cat ears and Uncle Ty twitched his ears, sending Biggums airborne again.

"He's cute." Uncle Ty said. Daddy walked in the door with the cage.

"Daddy let's go to my room!" I said and ran to my room with Biggums close behind me.

Ty's POV

"See what I mean?" I said in a low whisper. "Adam, there have been amber alerts all over the news! Merome could be in danger."

"She's a smart girl, she can handle herself." Adam replied calmly.

"But what if she can't? What if we and Mitch can't take care if her? What would happen if she was kidnapped?" Adam shook his head.

"I dunno, but I'm sure her bat's gonna take care of her." he joked.

"Yeah..." I chuckled a little. "There was something... Different about that bat, though."

"What do you mean?" Adam's head tilted a little. "I didn't see anything wrong."

"Yeah, but you're not part cat." I said jokingly. I turned on the news again to another amber alert and Adam's head snuggled into the crook of my neck.

Merome's POV

I put Biggums in his new cage. He seemed to like it. Daddy had put some bat food in the cage. What does bat food taste like? I grabbed a little piece and popped it into my mouth and immediately spit it out.

Gross. It tasted like dirt. But I watched Biggums nibble at his food. I smiled. Looks like Biggums likes dirt-flavored pellets. A cloth was put in front of my mouth and I was confused. I began to fade and blackness covered my eyes.
